The (Unofficial) Great Battles of History
Hoplite Warfare in Greece, 3rd Century BC
A battle module for Deluxe Alexander, covering two battles of the late 3rd century BC:
The module contains one full sized map containing the two half maps needed for the battle, an eight page rules booklet (which mentions some Internet resources, but not this site...), and 140 counters (43 of which are TQ hit and status markers).
Oddly enough, there's a miscut on the countersheet, as eight of the mercenary MI, LI, and LC have not been cut through, and are joined in pairs as if they were phalanxes. A production peril of using oddly shaped units, I suppose.
The maps are done in a new style, somewhat similar to Samurai. The nine(!) elevation levels now have "ridge lines," which is good because the lowest elevation levels are very close together in color. While the overall effect is aesthetically pleasing, I think it'll be a hinderance during play. The other terrain effects (streams, rocks, ridges, trenches, and woods) all have a more realistic look and are very pleasing. The town of Mantinea graphic took me a few seconds to figure out what was being portrayed. You don't want to know what I thought it was at first.
The module is new enough that I haven't had time to even set up the battles yet, but they look pretty good. They're reasonably small, apparently balanced, and feature MI, LI, LP, and even a smidgen of cavalry in addition to the expected phalanxes. Very promising.
