Turn 3: Falco's Activation

Sorry that this update is a bit late. Last weekend the game board, accumulating dust since August 1997, had a rendezvous with a three-year old boy and got rather the worst of it. Put a bit of a dent in the idea of a quick update over the weekend.

The voting:

Option

Votes
Recover hits, try for Momentum and attack then 10
Recover hits and rally the nearby RC 4
Attack, clearing out the blocking MI 3
Attack, one RC vs the LC, two RC vs the MI 1
Some recovery, some attacks 1

Lookit all them votes, wouldja? Keep 'em coming folks; the more the better. This particular vote is doubly nice for me because no arbitration/interpretation is needed.

Considering Falco's options, attacking is a bit of a desperation move. Which, of course, makes it the correct move if you consider the Roman position desparate! Suppose you do attack the MI: those TQ5 units with 3 hits will rout from Pre-Shock TQ checks 30% of the time. Even if they survive, 20% of the time a 3(2) result will rout the RC instead of the flanked MI!

With one routed enemy phalanx and four more in danger (worth 70 rout points total, enough to win the game) I don't think the Romans need to resort to such desperation attacks....yet, anyway.

The question then becomes whether or not to rally the nearby routed RC. While the Romans could use the extra unit, it takes one of Falco's three precious orders to move himself in range, and then another to attempt the rally, which has only a 50% chance of success. If Falco had a better chance of getting Momentum (and not being immediate Trumped by the Epirotes) then it might be worth it, but I agree with the majority here that the most effective use of Falco's orders is removing 6 cohesion hits from his units.

Falco's Activation
Routing, not shown: AS/VII LG h
In Pursuit: AS/XV Ex RC (w/ 4 hits)

Falco tries for Momentum and just misses with a '4'.

Remaining Activations:
Epirote: Pyrrhus (EIO already used), Megacles, Leonatus
 Roman: Laevinus

We're in the home stretch now, with the 4's up. What should both Megacles and Leonatus do? Should either (or both) try for Momentum, risking a trump by Laevinus?

Remember: units with their hits in parentheses are "finished" for the turn due to rallying or pursuit and may not move or shock attack.

Mail me.
