Turn 2: Megacles's Activation

The voting:

Option

Votes
Recover, shock the routed units 4
Attack the flank of the legions 6
Recover and attack with the unhit HC 3

The Epirote left is a bit cramped by the "Finished" cavalry [10.42 (1)] two and three hexes north of Megacles. Also, the HC with 5 hits is in no position to attack, and yet can't recover because it's in enemy ZOC.

That leaves four cavalry units available for orders. So what to do with those units?

Megacles's Activation

The HCs that are one and four hexes north of Megacles recover to full strength, as desired by the slim majority of voters. Crossing the river and knocking off the other two routed units would put more Rout Points in the bank, but most of the "pacifist" voters wanted the cavalry in good shape for Pyrrhus next turn.

The previous unhit unit (which hasn't moved yet, either) moves across a Finished HC and into the flank of the the Roman second line.

The HC with 4 hits isn't eligible for recovery (because it's adjacent to an enemy unit) but is in a good position to eliminate 10 Rout Points, so it stays put in will shock attack the routed cohorts. Since this takes no orders, Megacles moves to stack with the HC.

An interesting variation would have been to use the last order to have the skirmisher missile attack the cohort on the Epirote left.

Combat resolution is interesting:

Megacles's Activation
Routing, not shown: Macedonian LC
In Pursuit: AS/XV Ex RC (w/ 4 hits)

The northernmost HC performs as expected, wiping out the routed HCs while itself sustaining two hits.

The flank attack sees a bad string of luck for the Epirotes. The attacking HC (TQ 8, with one hit so far) routs the defending cohort at the cost of two hits (3 total), rolls a Pursue result and passes the TQ check necessary for a followup attack. The Pre-Shock checks see the routed defenders pass (dr '0'), forcing the attacker into another melee, which kills the defender but inflicts three more hits on the attacker HC (6 total). Advance after combat into the river adds another hit, for 7 total, just one point away from routing.

The Rout Point totals:
Side Current Limit Pct
Romans 55 185 30%
Epirotes 28 120 23%

Next up is Leonatus.
