Red Hat Linux for Internet Service Providers

The ISP-RedHat effort is an attempt to serve the needs of the Internet service providers using Red Hat LinuxRed Hat Linux is a freely-available, UNIX-like operating system by Red Hat Software, based on the popular Linux kernel and GNU software collection.

Introduction

Red Hat Linux (RHL) is not only a leading Linux distribution, it is also popular as a platform for Internet service providers because of Red Hat Software's history of providing flexible, capable distributions, of addressing security concerns quickly and effectively, and because of their willingness to interact with and respond to the RHL user community.

Unfortunately, RHL is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of users.  In some cases, the needs of those users conflict with one-another: what's good for the home user isn't necessarily what's best for larger, multi-user server environments.

The ISP-RedHat effort recognizes that the needs of the Internet service provider are often unusal and not always optimal for use on personal-use machines.  This effort, then, is to provide ISPs with alternatives to some packages provided with RHL to better meet the needs of the ISP environment.  It also provides the ISPs, a group deriving great benefit from the efforts of the Linux community, to return the favor by sharing their own efforts.

Discussion

Discussion of the ISP-RedHat effort is currently taking place in the redhat-isp-list mailing list, an independent mailing list hosted by Digitalpla.net focusing on issues of ISPs running RHL.  To subscribe to the list, send e-mail to majordomo@digitalpla.net with a message body of "subscribe redhat-isp-list your-mail-address", replacing your-mail-address with your e-mail address.
