Rainbow Mola

I bought this mola from the tour guide who took me around the San Blas Islands. It was worked on by two people, both his mother and his wife stitched it. It depicts a rainbow and is another common subject made into molas. As in many cultures, rainbows have great and happy significance attached to them. The small zig zagged edges are called ‘dientes’ after the Spanish word for teeth. They are needle turn appliquéd, as is the rest of the mola, by snipping small sections of fabric and turning the edges under then catching the turned edge down with thread.
