Two Washboards Mola
Kuna women often sew everyday objects into their molas as the motif or main design. This mola represents two washboards. Kuna Indians live on small coral islands in the ocean so daily the women of the tribe canoe or sail to a fresh water river on the mainland. While there they would collect water, bathe, scrub the clothing on the wash board, and collect firewood. This mola is one of the oldest in my collection. The workmanship of older molas is not the same high standard you see today. Perhaps the use of some modern conveniences like tinned food items have allowed the sewer more leisure time to sew and thus perfect her skills.
