MOLAS and MAPS

By Bob and Elizabeth Gibson

Molas

Elizabeth's passion is molas. She has a collection of over two hundred molas. These were purchased in various locations throughout Panama while we were stationed at Albrook Air Force Station, Republic of Panama. Mola is the Kuna Indian word for blouse but the term mola has come to mean the elaborate embroidered panels that make up the front and back of a Kuna woman's blouse. The Kuna Indians are the indigenous people who live on small coral islands in the San Blas Archipelago along the Atlantic coast of Panama and Colombia. Molas are collected as folk art and can be viewed at some of the finest museums in the world like the Smithsonian in Washington, DC and the Victoria and Albert in London. Some of my molas

Maps

Bob's vocation is mapping. He spent over 20 years in military mapping before retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1996. Presently, he works for Sterling Software in their McLean, Virginia office as a Systems Architect dealing with geospatial information (a fancy name for geographical data, whether it is a map, chart, file, or whatever). His present research interest is in the search and retrieval of geospatial information. Mapping Related Links
William (age 10) and Thomas (age 5) are Beanie Baby fans. Since their Mom likes to sew she is delighted that they finally like a toy which lends itself to dressing up. Somehow those action figures never did take to doll clothes very well. Mom wrote out directions to make party hats and sleeping bags (including sizes for McBeanies) that fit the beanie clan.
