Butterfly Wall Hanging
When I first arrived in Panama my neighbor
took me to the Co-operativa de Mola in Panama City. (You can buy
molas made by Co-op members by checking the Mola Art link). I
picked out a number of small tourist molas which all had butterflies
on them with the idea of making a wall hanging. On my next vacation
home to the US, my mother and I spent hours arranging them on
a design wall until the composition suited us. The next step
was how to deal with each of the molas being a difference size.
After much thought, we realized that yellow was the one color
they all had in common. Thus, we framed them in yellow fabric
so each came out to be 6 inches high by 7 1/2 inches wide. Black
seemed the best choice to set them in so we sashed each mola block
in black fabric. Not wanting to sew on the actual mola piece
we machine quilted in the ditch (between colors of yellow and
black) and some quilting is also in the black sashing. The entire
piece measures 19 inches wide by 46 inches long.
