Return to Guest Book

Mike, I'm sure there are many sailors who are better off because I didn't stick with NROTC in college. But none are as happy about that fact as I am. ;^) Glad to hear that we can expect Joe to chime in later. I wonder if he recalls that dousing.

Dewey: Is the Potomac adventure your way of saying that you did the rest of us a HUGE favor by not going into the Navy ? I called Joe Carpenter about a week and a half ago. He did not know about the Guest Book, and was getting ready to go to Europe. He said he would sign in after his return. So, it looks like we will have to wait to hear his comments!

OK ... I got a new superduper computer this past week and manage to lose an incredible amount of things off my old computer - one of which was my address book -- anyone have the Wesley's phone number? Please e-mail me with it. Thanks.

Sue: Joe and Steve were none to pleased with the results of my seamanship, but neither could they deny that the best approach to the oncoming wake was head-on. Didn't want to pull a "Poseidon Adventure" in those waters. So all they could do was grunt and drip. As for Steve, no email that I know of. I talked with him for a while shortly before the 25th year reunion but he wasn't going to make the gathering. The talking was fun. It was one of those conversations that fell easily into just the way it was "back then". Maybe we should start a campaign to get him to the 30th. For those paying attention to such things: The FMARS habitat module is up and operating in the arctic. We've had a couple 1-day "shakedown missions" and will squeak in 2 3-day missions before closing down for the season at the end of the week.

Janine: I followed my own advice and bought the first two America CDs instead of the new box set (still haven't found their third CD locally). Boy, am I glad I went that route. I can't imagine buying an America album without ALL the songs on those albums. My record playing system has been out of commission for a few years now, so I haven't been able to play my worn out LPs. Now I remember why I wore them out. Dem's good albums! They took the song list of their new box set off of Amazon, so I don't know which songs from the early albums are not in the set. However, one reviewer said 7 cuts from the first album are on it. That leaves 4 or 5 of their best songs out of the set!! Probably "Here", "Clarice", and "Donkey Jaw" are missing, and they are my favorite on the first. Don't bother trying Tower at Landmark for a while. I wiped them out.

Yeh Dewey, I'd agree that qualifies for all three! And must have been a pretty darn good physics project as well! And what did our buddy, Steve Sorrell think of it? Helmsman or maniac from hell? Why is it that rub a dud dub, three men in a tub comes to mind? I think we need to hear from Steve and Joe on this one!! Did they baptize you in the river of P for your prank? Does the Sorrellian have an email address that you know of? I know that you've been hiding him in Tempe...

One memory of being on the Potomac in High School: Steve Sorrell, Joe Carpenter and I were out in Steve's Catamaran sailing about and watching the dead fish, etc. float by. Along came the Wilson Liner. I had the helm so I headed us straight into the wake. (Look! An actual WAVE!) The wake was sizeable and crashed over the bow, soaking the entire deck of the cat, save for one little triangular wedge at the stern, where I sat, tiller in hand. Steve and Joe were drenched. Yuk! I was dry and laughing. Sue: Does that qualify as a diller and a dollar and a prank? ...... Sorry folks. Regret to say I will not be attending any dinner or Potomac cruises. (You don't want me gettin' y'all wet, do you?) Aside from being 2000 miles away, I'll be involved in some local (Colorado) support of the Mars Society's "Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station" on Devon Island in Canada. Check out www.marssociety.org for an idea of what's going on.

We can attend either outing but would probably lean toward Cedar Knoll (sorry Janine but I must defer to the wife's desire). All this talk of the Parkway and the Potomac sends me back to memory lane again. Here's one for Brad involving the Park Police and cars(of course): I had just acquired a red MG and headed out to the Parkway late one night with nieghbor, Carl Baker/MVHS 73, to show him what the car could do. I kinda, sorta used the circle in front of the plantation as a big skid pad in order to demonstrate the MG's cornering and handling capabilities to Carl. As a result I hung the tail out pretty good causing the tires to howl in protest. After a couple loops around the circle we headed north toward Ft. Hunt. Within about a 1/2 mile I spied flashing lights in the mirror followed by that all too familiar scream of a siren. Unbeknownst to Carl and I, one of the Park Police's finest smokeys had witnessed my little cornering demonstration around the circle. The cop came up to the car an asked if I thought I was going a little too fast around the circle and smart assed Carroll responded by noting that there were no speed limits posted in the vicinity. So the cop retorts,"don't you think if you were sqealin tires, you were perhaps driving a little too fast?" He got me there so I folded rather quickly and responded with a crisp army brat "yes sir!" Having lost that skirmish it was time to walk back to the squad car so I could be written up. However, I wasn't done yet. As I hopped into the passenger side of the squad car I sat one the cops Smokey Hat(oh shit!)and crushed it like a pancake! That misstep illicited a terse "strike two Mr. Carroll, maybe I should write this ticket after I assess your third strike." I was in a heap of trouble with no salvation to be had. But then a funny thing happened. The cop started asking me about the car - "how long have you had it?", "does it handle well?" (I can give you another demo sir, I mumbled under my breath), "How much you pay for it?", etc., etc., all the while I'm responding with a cacophony of humble yes sirs and no sirs waiting for the dreaded piece of paper that added points to my less then stellar driving record and took money out of my rather shallow pocket. As I took the ticket from my new found buddy, his words were music to my ears. "This is just a warning this time. You watch yourself son. I don't wanna be fishin you and that little car of yours outta the Potomac. Have a good evening." Yes Sir!

My vote for the 5th is dinner at Cedar Knoll, with a twist. That would be after dinner, we hire a small bus (Janine is great at arranging that sort of thing!) to take us around our old neighborhoods and old haunts for 2-3 hours- whatever the minimum time is. As a group, we can see what's changed and hasn't changed. Might be boring for the spouses?? I'll bring a bar and make drinks for everyone!! What do you think??

Ruthie offered to steal me away with her while en route to the Potomac River, but forgive me, Janine, as I will not be able to get that time off. School starts back here on Aug 10th, so sadly, just as well... I can certainly sense all the excitement! It is evident and punctuated by the frequent emotional spelling errors, I feel. I also noticed that the S.S. Anderson sailed through the GuestBook not too long before all the interest in cruises and ships came to light! THanks, Dewey! I never said that you weren't human. And Rich need not feel foolish about Mr. Swains' class, because I thought it was a delightful story back in Junior year when he diddd remember something about bananas! But back to my original thought, Dewey, you may have been and still are a twelve o'clock scholar, but you've always been quite a diller and a dollar, in on every prank you could engineer! Rich, my man, you have nothing to be embarrassed about! But just to even the score.. Rich.. this one's for you... It's actually a Potomac River Cruise story!(How appropriate) So bear with me. The only boat ride I ever had on the P was in a bass boat, and started out way down from the park on Gunston Rd. It was a long trip up the Potomac to the unforeseen destination of the banks below the runways at National Airport. This location was too intense for whales or submarines, so I kinda started to wonder what in the heck I was doing way out there. As I recall, we didn't stay under there very long; forgot to bring our OSHA headgear, ya know. Years later, the embarrassment of this cruise came back to haunt me when the movie "Wayne's World" was released, and there "they" were in a bass boar at the end of an airport runway!! What can I say? Party on Garth? No fear, my Potomac River Guide did not graduate with the rest of us from good ole MVHS. This divorcee, however, used to live near Frank before his wife left him.Hmmm

aaaahhhh!!! Was it Ruth or Janine complaining about the spell checker a few days back? When is someone going to write some code that will make sure you type what it is that you are thinking? I ran spell/grammar checker on that last entry, but it didn't catch that what I meant to say and what I typed were not one in the same. "I could NOT see the race anymore..." True story made into lame joke, made even more lame by omission of one word. I'm going back to lurker land. You guys have fun on your cruise or dinner, both places are good.

Gary, I remember the Morris Springer very well. We had some good times on that old hulk. When I went in the Navy I was jumped from e-1 to e-3 in bootcamp for my time in the Naval Cadet Corps. The Springer was year round and on the weekends except for the summer 2 week near sinkings, I mean cruises. We spent a lot of time pumping the bilges in that boat. And yes there is a "mini parking lot" near Cedar Knoll. I remember one night while attending the submarine races, or was it the whale fights? Well anyway one of the pale green park police cars pulls up and shines his flashlight into the car and advises that I should get the young lady home. Well his flashlight had ruined my night vision and I could see the race anymore, so off we went.

Gary-- WHOOPS- I just had a flashback. In Miss Scott's typing class our sophomore year,I thought I only needed to learn enough about typing to do papers in college. If I had known we would still be needing typing skills 30 years later, I probably would have been a much better typing student!

Gary? Using the "term" friend a little loosely aren't ya? Ya know ... some things in life are just better left behind. That very well could be one of them. Would be great to have ya Gary -- and it's sounding more and more like we're definitely going to be somewhere either on or riverside of the Potomac. We've been able to count up to at least a party of eight, possibly ten --- Mike's math left us a bit puzzled on just how many people he was bringing. ALthough Cedar Knoll is definitely closer to home and the view would certainly conjure up a few memories, I think my vote is still with the cruise. I don't know about the rest of you, but I just plain don't get out enough with adult-type entertainment and it's truly about that time.

First things first Janine: Do they have cute waiters at Cedar Knoll Inn? Actually, I've never been there and always wanted to go, so this sounds fab to me -- of course, the cruise thing sounds fab too. So does the Mount Vernon Inn. Just tell me where to show up (preferably, this would be the same location where the rest of you are)

OK .. here's one more alternative ... Cedar Knoll Inn ... the food's been much better since the new owner took over a few years ago ... and it over looks all those submarine race spots we used to frequent .... ok ... so SOME of us used to frequent
Janine

Mike? Hun? $316 ?? Haven't you pushed the price of this "priceless" cruise up a bit?
Janine
- Friday, July 21, 2000 at 23:56:37 (EDT)
I agree with Ruth, spending $79 for all of that is quite a bargain. So whatever we end up doing Aug 5, here is my personal budget for the night:----------An evening with former MV classmates........$158----------An evening that includes Ruthie flying in........$316----------A night when Dewey can join us........Priceless. (Ok Ruth, I was going to swith the order of the last 2 items but I figured your arrival was a sure thing and we needed to work on Dewey!!!)
Mike
- Friday, July 21, 2000 at 23:04:45 (EDT)
August 5 sounds great to me! I will throw in another dinner option to see what you think. How about having dinner at The Mount Vernon Inn at the MV Plantation? It's a great - looking restarant and the food is suppose to be very good. Plus, the good news for us is Eric Swanson is the manager (at least I hope he is still there.) So, I'm sure Eric would get us an excellent table - especially if we promise not to embarrass him! The bad news is they don't have dancing. BTW I remember when gas prices at the Crown Station on Rt1 jumped to 44 cents. I thought THAT was expensive and I wasn't even using premier 105 octane!!
Mike
- Friday, July 21, 2000 at 22:56:47 (EDT)
OK Frank .... Ruthie arrives here Friday August 4th but has other plans for that night. She's ours the evening of the 5th. SOOOO ... the cruise would be the night of the 5th. OF COURSE spouses are invited !! Course ... we've not had TOO many responses ... do you think you and the Mrs. could stand being alone with Ruth and I? Tickets can be purchased online from their site at www.spiritcruises.com -- be sure to get on the Spirit of Washington cruise -- would hate to have to go to Philadelphia to find you!! The website also lists the phone number to call in DC to charge your tickets by phone. Call me cautious -- but I am NOT buying my ticket until I know that more than me will for sure be on this cruise !!! We may not end up wih a huge crowd ... but it'll certainly be a fun one. STeve? Deb? Mike? John? Gary? Dewey wanna come to town? Robin? Anyone else?
Janine
- Friday, July 21, 2000 at 19:55:25 (EDT)
76 bucks for a river cruise??? That sure is a long way from the Wilson Line cruise to Marshall Hall on the old M.V. George Washington. I think it was about 5 bucks for the cruise and a ticket to the park. I spent my summers working on that old tub. Let's see for food we had stale popcorn, greasy burgers and hotdogs and flat soda of your choice. Entertainment there were pinball machines, until the night we had a riot, the whole crew went to the engine room and locked the hatches. Frank- remember the BP station with the car wash next to the drive-in? I would only go there when I needed a wash because they had the nerve to charge 38 cents per gallon, free wash with fill up.
Brad <brad.mitchell@verbatimcorp.com>
- Friday, July 21, 2000 at 12:30:06 (EDT)
OK Ruth and Janine - make up your minds. When is Ruthie coming to town? Then we can figure out what to do. My wife would not mind the cruise down the Potomac (assuming this is a "spouse's invited" event), as it is unlikely that we will get away for our 20th anniversary later in August. Mike - I traded the GTO for a Z/28 back in 1973 and then sold the Z to buy a more fuel-economical Nova. This was back when premium 105 octane gasoline was an exhorbitant $0.75 / gal.

Did you say "cute waiters"? Okay, I'm in.
Ruth
- Thursday, July 20, 2000 at 19:53:30 (EDT)
Ummm... yeah ... that pretty well sums it up. Except now the only place the Potomac smells on a REGULAR basis in near the Lorton Sanitation Plant -- and for a change it has nothing to do with what's in the Potomac (not yet anyway). Actually the dinner's NOT undistinguishable ocean fauna ... there's ham ... and chicken too. And they do NOT wear disco shirts (or however you described them) -- it's the waiters and waitresses so ... last seen they had vests and bow ties ... except for the sexy women with the short or tight clothes (I gathered this from the way the men were gaulking at them) but hey -- the waiters were pretty darn cute -- AND friendly -- even to us old ladies in the group.
Janine
- Thursday, July 20, 2000 at 19:44:39 (EDT)
Okay Janine, let me get this straight. You are suggesting the folks fork over $76/person to bob around on the Potomac (does it still smell?), eat (ocean fauna of questionable vintage), dance (to a reconstituted disco band in polyester shirts), hobnob with beloved classmates (that you wanted to KILL 28 years ago), drink (pricey watered down sour mash and/or grape juice de jour) AND see me? Sounds like a hell of a bargain!
Ruth <rhmelton@prodigy.net>
- Thursday, July 20, 2000 at 19:35:39 (EDT)
Oh yeah .... they do have group rates for 20 and above people ... but... before one can pin these people down .. one should see if there's any interest at all. ((SHRUG)) Maybe I just go by myself?
Janine
- Thursday, July 20, 2000 at 19:22:13 (EDT)
Well now ... ATTENTION PLEASE ...... wouldn't it be fun to tour DC by water, take a relaxing cruise down through the old military row and then cruise (YES ON A SHIP) from D.C. down past Old Town -- all the while while enjoy FANTASTIC company (ok -- better than average -- ok ... a bunch of old fogies that love being with each other) --a buffet dinner of steamship round and various seafood dishes -- enjoy a floor show -- AND -- be able to DANCE (yes I said D A N C E) to some oldies tuns (NO -- not by the original groups but you CAN'T have everything). Soooo ... I thought it would be kinda neat to do something a LITTLE more unusual the weekend Ruthie's here on 8/5. Spirit of Washington anyone? Doesn't it sound great? YOu people who don't have sealegs could just take dramamine (sp?)!!! Last few times I went I had a blast -- and it wasn't even with as an enjoyable bunch of people as you guys and gals are! And I'm thinking .... ok ... $35.00 a person isn't THAT much. But ... before I say anything I say to myself "OK ... so call and see if the cost is the same or if it went up a little bit." Well.... let's see if it still sounds terrific to you all if I tell you it's $75.79 a person (it did go up a slight bit in four years). DO NOT SIT THERE WITH YOUR MOUTHS AGAPE, SHAKING YOUR HEADS AND ASKING IF I'M CRAZY -- WE ALL KNOW I AM DAMMIT!! Anyway -- whatcha all think? Huh? huh? huh? (Oh yeah -- it doesn't include drinks and tip)

Janine-Mulligan's is no longer in Innsbrook. It's now on W. Broad b/w Parham & Hungary Spring, behind Bennigan's. Damon's is now at the former Mulligan's. The Innsbrook After Hours function has been moved from the area behind the shopping center to an area behind the Elk's Lodge off Nuckols. The Innsbrook Association has been "cleaning up" the area by putting more 'professional' establishments in the 'lime light'. This area has grown so much you probably wouldn't recognize it. Short Pump is now booming w/Wal-Mart, Kohls, Home Depot, Lowe's, and several strip malls, etc. They've had to install traffic lights on every corner! This area has become quite popular! Let me know if you ever want to come down for a visit.

HA! I've defeated the evil computer empire and infiltrated it's inner-most sanctum. It only took me two days and an entire dictionary of ribald and unprintable expletives. The only reason for my persistence is to see if any of you might like to party with me on Saturday night, August 5. Being the first Saturday of the month, I'm thinking that Peyton Place might be an appropriate spot to congregate but I could be talked into a less smokey and more convenient locale if you sissies aren't up to it -- like maybe John's house? (You folks figure out who will provide the burgers and beer; Janine and I will provide decorations). Wadaya say kids?

John? Ruth is convinced that you have a diabolical plan to keep her from accessing the web page ... she made it on from work but can't get to it from home -- no matter HOW many times she shuts down that computer of hers. Warning: She's threatening TP Bombs in two weeks!! EVERYONE DUCK !! RUN FOR COVER !!! ((or be covered in moldy rancid TP)) I, OF COURSE, will try to keep her away from it. I would NEVER participate in such an activity. But the woman in uncontrollable I tell ya ... simply uncontrollable when she gets feisty!! And ... no ability to access the guest book? Goes beyond feisty ... Tsk tsk tsk

Robin !!! I know Innsbrook !!! Used to hang out at Mulligans just about ever weekend about 3-4 years back. I love that area -- actually thought about leaving Nova and moving there at one point but vowed to never move during the middle of my kids' high school years. I did have a three-month period in there somewhere between one leaving MV and the other starting but ((sigh)) I just couldn't do it. Who knows ... maybe when this one has gone off to college . . . .

Steve--thanks for the info! Glad you enjoyed the show. It would be nice to see them perform, but that's quite a trip on a weeknight and short notice. Have to catch their show another time. I saw The Temptations & The Supremes(w/o D.Ross)in 72. That was a fantastic show as well.

I'll check on the 29th - sounds like a good plan. Dewey, If you really need to sell that car, check out a copy of "Hemmings Motor News". The Temps/Four Tops were cool last night but the place was hot - too many bodies and much humidity. It was worth it though. Bernadette, My Girl, Just My Imagination, etc. brought back many memories. The Temps only have one original left - Otis Williams, but the Four Tops still have three originals (they lost Lawrence Payton to cancer a couple years ago). These guys started the year most of us were born - 1954, and they still put on a good show! Unreal! Robin, In case you were interested they are on again tonight however I don't know about tickets being available at the gate.

John: Funny you should call me Al Bundy. I have a niece named Kelley. I've successfully avoided the other family trappings. Brad wins the ID prize on "Dewey Cheetham and Howe". I've been told National Public Radio has a show called "Car Talk" with the famous Tappet Brothers, Click and Clack. (I've never actually heard their show because it comes on in the MORNING.) Anyway, they do the show from Cambridge and Dewey et al are their attorneys. ..... Steve: I recall the ad campaign they had for the Barracuda where one guy always called it a Bacaruda. In one ad, they had a guy do the "Repeat after me" thing to get him to say it right: "BA." "Ba." "RA." "ra." "COO." "Coo." "DA." "Da." "OK, now say it all at once." "Baba-rara-cucu-dada" Always got a kick out of that. So sometimes I refer to it as the Babararacucudada. I'm surprised to hear so many people still have their old cars. Next thing you know, Colella will magically produce his Corvair. As for selling or keeping mine: I think I'd sell it to someone who I knew was into restoring it but I might want to include first right of refusal, i.e. if he ever sells it, he has to try and sell it to ME first. While I know a lot of people would enjoy it, I'm not really interested in doing the car work myself. I'd have to pay someone to restore it. And the 'cuda taking up garage space is forcing another car to sleep out in the rain. But maybe I ought to just put a battery in it, get the emissions tested, re-register it and see how I like DRIVING the thing before I make a decision. I suspect the V-8 would feel good. .... Cat Stevens doing music again? I wonder if he's still "got it". Or is he singing songs about Islam?

I see another 70's icon is about to start making music again. Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens). Holly and I would be interested in a trip to the raceway if one comes to pass......

Janine- I'm here, just lurking!! I'm jealous that Dewey, Steve, and Brad still have their original cars. My first was a real lemon!! Malibu Classic- worse car I ever had. (Still kick myself for not buying that Duster!)Couldn't wait to get rid of it but you guys DON'T EVEN THINK OF SELLING YOURS! Steve - I told you about Ann last September. Think back, it will come to you or give me a call & I'll give you the details (wouldn't want to bore the rest of the group!)

Janine - If the weather is good, I'm going to take my kids to Summit Point to see the karts this weekend. I guess I'll take the pick-up truck in case any wayward karts need a good home (shhhh don't tell Cas). Next week would be better for Old Dominion or one of the car Cruises (Annandale or Manassas).

Whew! Where do I start? You all have captured my interest on several fronts over the weekend. I just returned from a couple days down in Blacksburg, Va. - thats right Hokieland, Go Gobblers! Boy did that bring back memories. I never set foot in a single classroom down there but I spent alotta time partying and chasing women on that campus in the 70's. I'll always rememeber Jill - the most striking combination of dark hair and blue eyes...ah, but thats a fish story better told over a beer. Mike, are you holding out on me? The MVHS alumni intelligence network has informed me that you are refering to Ann as "your wife". Did you two get married without imforming me - your best MVHS buddy????!!!! By the way thanks for the tip on the Bicycle article in the Post. Debbie's Dad is 82, had a stroke and is still riding those high wheel bikes. Incredible! He put me up on one of those damned things a coupe years ago and scared the #*%+! outta me! So Dewey, you still have an old "Bacaruda" (as we used to call them) from days past? Fix that puppy up! Don't let it go the way of Frank's GTO (the most gorgeous ride to ever have graced the MVHS parking lot). I still have my old high school wheels after all these years (64 Chrysler 300 - 440 Magnum motor, 4 barrel carb, dual exhaust, the whole works - a rocket for sure). It looks no different then it did in 72. One of it's best features is a front bench seat the size of my living room couch. It was perfect for me and a date at the drive-in or "out in the back woods" as Bob Seeger used to sing in Night Moves. I'll have to check out the diner in Annandale, Frank. All this car talk is starting to work on me a little. I'll see ya Thursday Janine. We'll determine then if we have any additional interest in Saturday. On the music front I'm getting pretty hyped for tomorrow night at Wolf Trap. Deb and I will be accompanying an old MVHS buddy of mine (Carol Sable 74) to the Four Tops/Temptations show. Should be cool!

Checking in from Lurker Land. This talk of cars and music from our youth has stirred the memory up. I too expect certain songs to follow certain songs. I still own the first "new" car I ever had, a 73 Dodge Challenger that I bought at what was then Mt. Vernon Dodge. Francis Fadley, Tyler's dad gave me a really good deal on it. Dewey, like your 'Cuda, it is sitting under a cover waiting for me to find the time to restore it. My wife quit bugging me to get rid of it when some guy drove up one day and offered me more than I paid for it new. When I showed him the window sticker and warranty card on it, he said "I don't have enough money, do I?" It still has the under dash slide mount for the 8 track mounted, lord knows where the 8 track is. Talk about songs following songs, how about knowing when to expect that click in the middle of the drum solo of IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA or the 3 clicks on Thick as a Brick. :)

Replies Reprised in the order of presentation: John H: good one on the capacitor. After you mentioned it, I did remember us all standing in a circle holding hands while two people touched the capacitor and we all jumped at once. (Were you in that last-period class with us?) ...... Purple bananas don't reproduce? That must be why you hardly ever see them anywhere. It's the kind of phrase I might expect from the author of such classics as "Little Red Little". ;^) ...... Mike: I wouldn't worry about foot-in-mouth disease. Compliments are NOT like gum: You don't have to bring enough for EVERYONE. ..... Rich: Ball bearing on carbon paper for refraction! Very good! I had forgotten about that! And you guys really have me curious about that "angels on the head of a pin" thing. .... Congrats to the Varsity Weight Lifting team. Didn't they take State our senior year? I think that's why they all missed the team yearbook picture. ..... I can only say 2 things as an attempt to participate in all this "Car Talk": 1) I've seen "Dewey, Cheetham and Howe" on an office window in Cambridge. (NPR fans might get that one.) 2) I've still got the first car I ever owned: a '68 Barracuda with a 318 V8. I bought it from my dad, the original owner, in 1975. The upholstery has exploded and the paint is a dull memory of the red it used to be, but it rests comfortably in the garage, waiting for me to think it's worth a) tuning up and driving again, b) restoring or c) selling.

Janine: Although Rhino records generally does a really good job of making old records sound good, I think a cheaper (and maybe better) option to the 3-CD set would be to just buy the first three or so America albums in the "old-fogey" bin. Like Dewey, my brain is wired to expect a certain song to follow each song on the album (the old dog syndrome??). Somehow, listening to the original order creates a more nostalgic experience than the new jumbled order, mixed between several albums and time frames. Although there are more songs on the new set, because CDs can handle more time than the old LPs, I also find that "Best of" albums also tend to crop songs from the original to fit more songs on the CD.

PS: I forgot to thank Dave for arranging to have America start off the show with the song "Riverside". I was very honored, Dave. Thanks.

The America box set update? "30 Years of America" .. CDNOW has it for 44.99 but www.borders.com has it for $42.00 and change ... Amazon hasn't even heard of it yet. The Borders site actually lists all the tracks on all three CDs ... it actually looks like it might be worth it.

Steve- I thought about you today while reading The Washington Post and wondered if you saw the Bicycle Essay on the front page of the Style Section. Not only does it mention modern bikes, but it gives some early history. I remember Debbie's father owns and rides high-wheelers from the late 19th Century, so he may enjoy it too.

Dave - The GTO is sitting behind Custom Transmissions on Rt.1, long-suffering from neglect. Here's the Mid-Atlantic Camaro Club "cruise" info (not that anything will be happening tonight with rain in the forecast): Friday nites at the Juke Box Diner in Annandale. The diner is at the corner of John Marr Drive and Columbia Pike. Take Little River Turnpike, Route 236, east to John Marr. Pep Boys is on the right corner. Turn left and go to the next light. That is John Marr and Columbia.

Steve - If it's not raining tomorrow, I'll check out Checkers and see if they are still doing the Friday night drive-in. I don't know what happened to the Mid Atlantic Camaro Club drive-ins that used to occur at Burger King in Fairfax. Last year they moved to the shopping center across from Woodson HS. I to think the about of restraint I used. Now ... all I can hope is that the band isn't going somewhere that day :::: sigh :::: the things I do in my so-called spare time when I would much rather be doing fun stuff that *I* want to do. Chances are good that I'll be there tho since the 24th is a Sunday. You sure you're up to having your own cheering section there, bud? Hmmmmm ... I don't EVEN believe you're challenging me to kick your butt -- now THAT would be fun :) Party's at Steve and Deb's? Hot Tub? YEAH!! Video camera???? I DON'T think so!!! Racing? Did I hear people talking about racing?! Lets see here - I must apologize for not making myself clear. Frank, Janine, Robin, what I was really aluding to in Manassas was the Saturday Cruise-In at Chubby's Restuarant on Rte. 234. These old guys (like us) fill up the parking lot with multitudes of gorgeous classic cars and hot rods. Great eye and ear candy for car nuts! It's a real throw back to the 60's complete with un muffled, 3/4 race cam V-8s and do wop music. I figured you may be interested in this stuff (Frank and I ran into each other at one of these things years ago in Fairfax). If you can remember the Mel's Diner scenes in the movie American Graffiti, you get the picture. But hey, if everybody wants to go to a racetrack, my next "home" race will be at Summit Point September 24th (assuming the car is still in one piece). And if you don't want to watch me then I challenge all to a match race at the go-cart track of your choice! I'll never live it down when one of you kicks my butt! No challenges to the kids Frank - they have too much of a weight advantage when you're dealing with 7hp karts! But you're on Janine! Ruth, I just love race fans! Your choice of venues is impecable. By the way, the racer that died in a crash last week was Kenny Irwin, the NASCAR driver - not Eddie Irvin, the Formula One Jaguar driver. Sad all the same though. Oh, One more thing. We had talked about throwing a party during the America Concert at the Birchmere. Deb and I are game. The hot tub and my video camera are fired up and ready for action...

See Steve? I wasn't the only one who forgot about the diner and the cruisin' and thought of Old Dominion first. Frank - we've done the little tracks at Funland (or whatever it's called) in Fredricksburg a few times -- the kids (or not so kids anymore) seem to enjoy both the tracks they have as much as some of the adults there. THere's still that kart track in ALexandria -- not a favorite but is close and does in a pinch when you're driving around trying to amuse a car full of race fanatics. The 2002 reunion? Geez ... I'm still celebrating the 20th! But speaking of which ... any brainstorms on where and what to do for the ((shreaking)) 30th? We could just give up and have a BBQ in John's backyard? He's got a TON of 70's music ... and a new house! Of course, Steve has that jacuzzi in that terrific Great Room -- oh oh oh .. slumber party time!! EVeryone bring a sleeping bag? Unique concept. Crap -- it's only Wednesday and my brain is apparently already overfried.

More racing commentary for the globe-trotting CarSteve: Absent any other compelling distractions on my Air Canada flight up to Ottawa, I found myself leafing through their in-flight mag and came across a great article on the Montreal Grand Prix and thought of you. I'm a sucker for those screaming engines and have been jealous ever since you said that you had actually been there. One of my most cherished secret fantacies is a 5-year plan that would take me around the world to all the races of the Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit -- Montreal, Barcelona, Melbourne and of course Monte-Carlo just to name a few destinations. It was a tragedy to learn of Eddie Irvine's death in a crash a week or so ago. Wasn't he driving a Jag in the Montreal race? I hope you are very careful when you are hauling that AMAC around the track, mon ami. We'd miss you (probably) if you made a wrong turn. And Frank, you be careful too when you hang the rear end of that Porshe out on the exit ramp okay?

Oops - forgot to reply to Steve. Personally, I'd rather make the trip to Summit Point and see the karts or the cars, but I could do Old Dominion. Let me see what I can find out about the racing schedule. PS-I remember the days when the "Woodbridge Kart Club" was really in Woodbridge (where the DMV is, across from Potomac Mills). Both my son and daughter have the racing urge - took them to the "micro-kart" (~7hp) track in Chantilly over the weekend and they had a ball. Robert is finally tall enough to drive, Shauna had to ride with me and tell me how to drive :)

Sue - The "varsity weightlifting team" was a joke perpetuated by Rob Casassa or Richard Jannell (I forget who was the bigger culprit, It could *not* have been me) on the yearbook staff. Rob, Richard Jannell and I used to lift weights after hours (this was long before pumping iron was "in" and those two were far more serious about it than I ever was). I think Richard suggested that we sneak it into the yearbook submission form to see if anyone would catch it. They didn't.

I gave poor Joe one compliment, you got much more and yet I'm treating you like chopped liver??? I don't think so!- At the risk of referring to my fellow classmates as slabs of meat ( remember Janine first used food terms here!)let me make it clear there was no chopped liver at Mount Vernon- We (I'm being P.C. and not just referring to the females) were -and still are - Grade A Prime Filet Mignon!! And as far as Chip Hagerup goes,he and I talked for awhile at the 25th Reunion. Regarding the "If true (and we have only your memory to rely on)", I am going to invoke one of my favorite new quotes ( Thanks Sue, I think this is a great one!), "I could no sooner forget that than Dewey could forget his first name!!" Sue- The last time I saw Joe Carpenter was about a year ago. He is an artist (portraits - and an excellent one!) He was doing that full-time, but now works in catering as a sales rep. I told him that when we were at Mount Vernon I always thought he was the luckiest guy in school. When we were juniors, Lois Kimble and I were in Mrs. Brown's 5th period Business Economics class. Joe used to walk Lois to class every day and they were dating that year.... Yeah Joe Carpenter, he was one lucky guy!!

Hi Kathy! Is your madrigal voice still that of an angel? So ironic that you should sign in as Rich is speaking about the "angel problem" of MVHS chemistry lore! No student ever did solve that problem correctly even after pages of calculations, quoth Mr. Marcus. However, Barbara Eggers' Dad (a professional engineer) came the closest! After studying his calculations for hours, I remember, in very general terms, how he first calculated the surface area of the cone, and then the volume. (Math..hmm..where was Dewey when we needed him?)Then divided that by the size of one angel!I didn't learn any chemistry that night, but we had some fun anyway at Steve's. And Rich, I knew that you knew that it was me....And I also know that for Purple Bananas/True or False, the correct answer is True!! Right Mike? I also remember that the trio of Colella, Sorrell, and Atkinson moved on to computer science class with Ovid Butler! Who remembers that? It was fun, I remember Joe Carpenter was in there with us as well! Who has heard from Joe these days, anyway? Now, one more question that perhaps Frank or Dewey can elaborate on...I remember Chris Long and Mike Davis as having participated on the Gymnastics Teams at Mvhs, but what about the Weightlifting Team? Does anyone remember?

Hey Frank! Welcome back! Hope all is returning to normal for you on the home front. I've been busy with work and that damned intoxicating Flyball Dog Racing stuff this summer so I've only entered on race so far this season. To make a long story short, the car ran good, I qualified on the pole, let too guys get inside me at turn one, spun on lap two in the hairpin trying to get em back, and spent the rest of the race playing catch up - salvaged a third, a bit of pride and brought the car home in one piece so what the hell. Hows the Porsche running? Hang the rear end out on an exit ramp in my honor next time you take it out - not too far though. We know how those rear engined teutonic wonders can come around on us quicker than the blink of an eye! By the way, think about a trip out to Manassas some Saturday evening....

Sue, I *really* thought that it was you at Steve's, but I couldn't quite recall and didn't want to accuse you unjustly of associating with the likes of us (as I recall, we did *not* get a satisfying answer for how many angels would fit). Mike, one of us was on drugs. I definitely remember being somewhat juvenile on Swain's homework assignments, but making up completely fictitious answers?? Purple bananas?? If true (and we have only your memory to rely on), I'm...um, what, embarassed? Well, something. Okay, two more Price physics things: 1) Dewey, I remember Kent's and your calculus presentations -- lazy bastards! 2) there was some experiment with rolling a ball bearing down an inclined plane on carbon paper to simulate, what, refraction? 3) (okay, I lied) Dewey remembers more about physics class than I forgot -- bastard!

Kathy - The crabs are kind of small this year. Then again, you'll never notice after a few beers. Janine (and others) - You should try to hook up with Sandee Flores regarding the King's Dominion trip. She still works there. Send an email to vatexmex@bealnet.com. Steve - How's the racing this year?

The visions of Mr. Swain and Mr Price Science classes causes me to return from the Lurking mode. My memories of Mr Swain are of him breaking the necks of the chickens and dissecting the frogs. It ruined me totally of necessity to understand biology. Mr Price's class was a different story. I loved it because he didn't care whether you stayed in class or not as long as you were there for roll call and the tests. And if memory serves me ( which most of the time it doesn't anymore) no one received lower than a C in his class. I usually left class and headed to the choral room or out the door! I've just returned from a great 4th of July visit with Kathy Kalal Vircik in Alabaster AL. It was great fun "trying" to remember all the crazy happenings around Mt Vernon. I'm heading up to Alexandria this weekend for a family reunion. We get a couple bushels of Blue Crabs, a trash can filled with ice and beer and sit in the 99% humidity with all the aunts, uncles, cousins, children and grandchildren and have a great time. I vote for the next Class reunion to be a "Crab Feast".

Naw. Peter Pan never did much for me. However, I've always had a crush on Tinkerbell. Dave, If I tell the Debster you guys made your way on to that tour bus I'll never hear the end of it!

Hey! the only thing I did was get the tickets. Was sure glad we got the front row seats. Holly,Cindy and I did get to meet both Dewey and Gerry as they did come out to talk and sign autographs. Steve tell Debbie we had drinks on the bus. They are two very down to earth guys. They also attend their class reunions if their not on the road!!! But still the best part of the evening was the all the young people sitting at the table.

A big thanks and Major hooray to Dave for putting this evening together. Great music and extraordinary company once again!!! To those of you who didn't join us? You should have darnit! It could have been just my overactive imagination but I swear I was having flashbacks to the summers of '71 and '72 tonite. Good flashbacks ...I think -- they were only fleeting moments - NOTHING compared to what Dewey and Mike seem to be able to recall. Isn't it amazing how certain songs can transport us back 20 years? (And yes I can add and subtract -- 2000-20=72 in my book ... actually my calculator does not computer past 20 years -- a handy little novelty to have around). SUE!!!! She lives!!! Hun -- rent the movie. ANd if you can't manage to watch the entire thing before you see our beloved classmate -- fast forward to the complete end and back it up about 1 minute, don't blink and look to the right of your TV screen. Good to have you back with us lady. OK now ... who is really game for Busch Gardens on the 16th? A count of four is NOT enough for a group discount !!!

Nice try Rich! Was it a girl??? I don't remember her name....But you and Steve Sorrell sat behind her all year long in Spencer Dicker's class! I always envisioned you both as straight men until I learned otherwise that year...along with a little chemistry! I could no sooner forget that than Dewey could forget his first name!! So yes, I was there at Steve Sorrell's house, chowing down on his mother's Pepperidge Farm cookies. And about that Corvair, how many of you guys had one of those, anyway? Bob Vosburg had one too until he managed to become airborne momentarily, and flipped it on Gunston Rd! Mike, and Dewey, and Janine....Hmmmm. I'm certainly enjoying reading your memoirs! And for the minority of 72ers who have not seen "Contact," what exactly am I missing?

Don't worry Dewey, I didn't forget about you! Here's a follow-up to the Fred Burkes story. After MV, Alan Scarce, Fred, and I worked for the same company. I told Fred about the cafeteria story and he told me the reason he ate so much was because he wrestled in the Unlimited Weight category and he had to eat ALOT of food to make THAT category. He ate so much food that it was too expensive for 1 locker pal, so he had 3 of them. ( It was still expensive for each of them to supply him with one bag!) People were always making comments about it and that's why he was eating during our lunch shift that day- to get away from the regular lunch shift remarks. Poor guy- then he ran into us! You are right, I guess I'm lucky to have lived to tell the story ( or not be brain-damaged from the head bashing I could have received!) No comments, JANINE!!!

Richard- I have another Mr. Swain memory to share. I'm knocking myself out keeping up with his homework (yeah, right) which involved answering the questions at the end of the chapter. You told me not to bother giving him the real answer because Mr. Swain just checked to see that we did the hemework: he didn't check to see that we really answered the questions! You showed me how you did it-you just made up the answers. AND to take it one step more, you believed if we made up REALLY outlandish answers he would never catch us. As an example, we both answered the same question with "Because purple bananas don't reproduce." You were the first one he checked and he told you what a good job you did! While he was checking mine, I was afraid I would give it away by laughing!! After he walked away, we were howling with laughter. From then on, we always made up answers and it was down-hill all the way!! You were always one lucky S.O.(Gun!).Dewey is right- It is your turn to take back the trays and lucky for you, we are on summer break!!!!

OK, Dewey. Although I remember NONE of the highlights of Price's class (Mr. Chips, as Marfing and I called him), I DO remember something you didn't mention: That was the charging of a capacitor, and then running around the halls picking out some poor underclassman (or failing that, a senior) to zap with the charge! Made for some excitement.

OK, I'll admit I did learn some things in Price's class. I was just looking at my last entry in here and suddenly an image of the "ripple tank" flashed in my mind and I remembered that I really could learn about double slit interference by watching the shadows of the water on the paper down below. (I think of the ripple tank as the Physics' class answer to the ESCP stream table.) And I remember taking a microscope slide, smearing some black liquid graphite suspension on it so that it was completley black, and then taking two "safety razor" razor blades (remember what those were?), holding them together and scoring the black slide, making two slits separated by a razor-blade width. Then we looked at some special light sources Price had, through the slits on the slide and we could see the double slit interference pattern in the light. Pretty cool stuff. And I seem to remember having a weight attached to paper and some spark generator that would mark the paper. You let the weight fall, pulling the paper past the sparker and you got these equally timed marks that clearly showed the acceleration of the weight as it fell. I'm guessing we that we measured the separations of the spark dots and got that to match the one equation I think we learned in there: x = 1/2 * a * t^2. And I do remember one test question being about how it would look to you if you were on a merry-go-round and you released an object and let it fly outwards. What path would it appear to take to you? And, of course, what path would it appear to take to someone standing off to the side? Oh! And I remember these really dry movies with two "scientists" (in their white lab coats, of course) demonstrating frictionless motion with dry ice pucks. They did a great demo by putting a camera above them and then having one of them slide the puck over to the other. Then they put them on a rotating stage and did it again, showing it first from a camera that wasn't moving so you could see how the passer would move around the table to the far side by the time the puck got there. Then they showed it from a camera locked to rotate with the stage. Now the scientists didn't move but the puck seemed to move in a circular motion all on it's own. I thought that was great. Gee.... I'd better stop now. It's like hypnosis. "It's all coming back to me now...."

Jump startin' the Corvair. Now THAT'S a flashback to high school days. Why just the other day I heard "Sweet City Woman" on the radio. I also have images of that car associated with The Who's "Tommy" while riding over to Wesynton in the rain to pick up John Atkinson for a football game (junior year). As for physics class, my memories are similar to Rich's: Me and Kent (reprising our roles as lab partners from ESCP) sitting at that same mid-left row with Rich and Sandee in front of us. And, of course, Linda Lowden (across the aisle). Guess I'll take Mike's advice and avoid sounding like a dirty old man. 'nuf said. (Also, at the beginning of the year it appeared that Mia Kelly was going to be in that class with us but she transferred out. I was disappointed. Again, I'll invoke the Mike Davis "It doesn't sound the same at this age." rule and shut up.) Anyone else remember being in Price's class 6th period? (Oh yeah. Marty Shirilla was in that class.) I don't remember learning squat in there. Since leaving MVHS I've learned to appreciate HOW BAD ITS SCIENCE DEPARTMENT WAS! ESCP and Biology seemed OK, but who learned anything from Maskalenko's Chemistry class and Price's physics class? Don Woods and I still wonder which of us would have gotten the PTA award for Physics that year if they hadn't stopped giving out awards for things like SCIENCE and MATH! (Am I bitter? Oh, maybe a little. It was the only time I had a chance for one of those things and they called off the race. Grrr.) And I don't remember ever having a science teacher mention that MV had a Science Club. And they certainly never mentioned things like science fairs. The only thing I remember about Price's class (besides his first-day explanation of what a "cultural C" was) is that at the end of the year we each had to do a class presentation on a topic of our choice. I think Kent did something on how geiger counters worked. (Hey, I LEARNED SOMETHING in there!) Rick Panell and I teamed up to do a quick intro to calculus. He covered differentiation of x^n with the Leibniz method while I did integration by just doing what he did backwards. Basically we regurgitated stuff from Yearick's class so we didn't have to actually do any research. I also remember being absent the day the class took slinkys into the hallway to study wave motion. I was bummed. Sounded fun. And, of course, I remember the smell of popcorn filling the halls as we all went to that last class of the day, courtesy of one Richard Colella who had been busy stoking the popcorn maker in the band library during 5th period. That way, by the end of 6th, people all over the school were in the mood for popcorn on their way to the buses. Made the band a tidy sum of cash. ...... Well, now I've skipped over Chemistry. I'll have to save that for another time. ..... Mike: I have NO RECOLLECTION of us sitting at lunch and giggling at Fred Burkes. Can you say "Suicidal"? Must have blanked it out as a defense mechanism. No sense going through life chanting "I'm too stupid to LIVE!" And it goes to show that I am not the undisputed master at obscure memories from high school. We all have our own little moments that stand out in our heads. You apparently remembered the important stuff that would help you survive: Don't make fun of the big big man if you don't want to be squashed like a bug bug bug. BTW, I too bought "Contact" (on DVD) and watched it with a bunch of friends (on someone else's "home theater"). I was quick to point out that "That guy is a friend of mine from high school!" ..... Oh,and as for the lunch trays: It must be Colella's turn!

Mike, I'd *completely* forgotten about our lab partners in Swain's class! What a hoot! Dietzel, Fadely, you, and me -- weird group! And along that same line, Dewey, remember Price's physics class? Aside from actually learning some physics (ok, not much), we had a pretty interesting crew. Let's see, there was you, and Kent...and Sandee, me...and, let's see, uh, oh yea, Linda Loudon! And one more -- chemistry with Marcus. I seem to remember spending *hours* at Steve Sorel's house one afternoon trying to calculate how many angels would fit on the head of a pin! (Who else was there that afternoon? It was a girl, I remember that. I remember giving her a ride home in my Corvair, which had to be started by rolling down the hill (not uncommon for that car)).

GARY!!!!! You surfaced !!! And just as we were getting ready to send out the search party looking for Gilligan, the Skipper and ... oh sure... the Professor too to some abandoned island in the Caribbean. (I'll leave it to you to figure out which of those characters is you and which would be the beloved Mr. DeChants). DEWEY !!! You just never cease to amaze me !!! Oh ... and I found the picture we took of you're locker back in December when John and I and his family were in the OLD "plant". Or was that in February? See? I can't even remember THIS year let alone 20+ years ago (yes -- no matter WHAT all of you say -- we only graduated 20 years ago ... and next year? we will have only graduated 20 years ago ... and the year after? You got it!! I REFUSE to get any older and I'm going stomping and screaming. Mike? "Gymnasts during our junior year" doesn't count ... I managed to refrain from hanging with them (so to speak) until our senior year. It's difficult to remember whether the junior year or the senior year had the best "cast" parties though. And .. I'll have you know that I even BOUGHT "Contact" -- just for your little cameo appearance and one-liner at the end. I've even watched it a time or two. My humblest of apologies to the webmeister for not making it Saturday night -- and apparently you need to share your energizer bunny secrets with a few more of us. Can't wait to see you all tomorrow night. I'll be there as soon as I escape work -- hopefully on time and around 6:00 so save me a seat for dinner!!!! Sigh ... life's always so lonely when Ruthie is travelling and I'm left to my own volition with you guys -- but what a wonderful bunch you are.

Janine and Dave- WE understand your not making it Saturday night because of being over-worked. However, I don't know if you'll get any sympathy from John, our fearless leader, who knows no obstacles. He made it even though he was still suffering from the effects of the night before--- Talk about dedication and commitment! John- I know you had a very busy holiday, but did you ever make time to find that furniture?? Dewey-Not that I would ever clutter my brain with useless information that would ever do me any good- but I distinctly remember being the last one to take back the trays. Which means next time it is your turn!

Talking to my old MV classmates-what a great way to spend the 4th!! Gary-you have found the perfect place to spend the holiday-at Mrs. Thomas's house. She was a great substitute teacher, and I always enjoyed it when the regular teacher was out and she took over. Janine- in case you never knew, I was on the gymnastic team when we were juniors and a thespian later in life so feel free to tell me ALL your inner-most secrets! If they are good enough, you might wind up as Chapter 3 (but I can't promise anything --yet). If I write my book, I will promise it will be a best seller--even if I have to make something up! Dewey- Let me make one thing clear- YOU ARE THE MASTER. YOU ARE THE GREATEST. THERE IS NO WAY I WOULD EVER CHALLENGE YOU!!! I am content to be left in your dust!! With that being said- who was the person who put all those quarters in the cafeteria juke box and played Frank Sinatra tunes over and over and over? Yes, I do remember the drill teamers sitting at the next table. However, as cute as the comments were coming from a couple of high school boys- these same comments now would make us sound like 2 dirty old men!! And I wonder how subtle we really were- after all I remember one occasion when Fred Burkes and Karen Paradise sat by themselves at that very same table. It was wrestling season and Fred had 3 big shopping bags FULL of food from his secret locker pal. He was eating ALL the food and you and I were laughing & making comments about it. Finally, Karen came up, stood behind us, and (when we turned around and looked behind us) said "I think you boys should calm down and eat your lunch and not worry about Fred's lunch!!" I was not suprised to find out years later that Karen had become a teacher. She really did know how to handle kids (even when she was one herself!) Ruth- the weather here has been very warm the last few days, and the humidity has not been bad. However, we DO appreciate your concern!! It is good to know that "Ruth's Canadian B&B" is open and ready for business. Just name your price

90-some degees and humidity in the 80's. Gee Ruth, that would be a mighty pleasant day for July in TALLAHASSEE, wouldn't it? ;^) Here in Denver we're getting some of that monsoonal flow out of the gulf so the temp is also in the 90's and the humidity is up to a muggy 33%. There's actually CONDENSATION on the outside of my coke bottle. (Not enough to leave a ring on the table, mind you, but if you look close, you can actually see a slight fogging formed from water that came from RIGHT OUT OF THE AIR!)

Mike, invitations to my Canadian paradise are free. Directions are not. Ante up and you too can be sipping boat drinks in the bright sunshine/cool breeze of my northern wilderness. Otherwise, I'm happy to simply contiunue to torture you. Let's see...DC area weather report says the expected high is 90-something down there, cloudy, with humidity of ... what?...87%. GOSH, sounds like you all must be sweltering!

Mike Davis: A couple weeks ago you mentioned stories from the lunch table, senior year. I remember paying a lot of attention to the table behind us in as subtle a manner as I could manage. "I've got two words for you, buddy....... Drill Team!" (and thank heaven for mini-skirts!)BTW, I think it's your week to take back the trays. I actually have in my possession a letter I wrote to Dan Adkins on one of the first days of our senior year, where I passed the letter around the table and got everyone to write a quick note. It's kind of a kick to see, now. Mike Pickwick was even there since he didn't have to be off to college for a few days. It comes complete with gravy stain.

I see the Fox Network has taken Ruth's question of June 27 to heart. Check out their website at www.wheresdewey.com. (I'm NOT making this up!) So I see the gauntlet has been thrown down to see what can be remembered from biology class: I had Mrs. Avery, 3rd period, just before lunch. I sat at the front right (right by the door). Peggy Barron was my lab partner (which always felt like a brush with the "in" crowd for me). I remember her sharing some "Smarties" candies with me one day. Maybe that was her secret. Rumor at the last reunion was that she has gone on to become a neurosurgeon. Hard to believe that OUR adventure with that frog would lead to something like that. We had no trouble doing the dissection. I remember being amazed as Mrs. Avery would pith the frog (scrambled brains with a side of toast) and we'd get to open it up and see its little heart still beating. The next day someone said their frog's heart had stopped beating so Mrs. Avery put a few drops of adrenalin on it and ba-bump ba-bump, it started right up. (At least that's how I remember it.) I also seem to remember dissecting a worm and thinking "Worms got innards?" but maybe that was junior high. I remember that the first Earth Day was that year and it seemed quite timely for us to be learning about what ecology MEANT at a time when it was suddenly becoming THE buzz word and they were dedicating a whole day to it. (After all, I don't remember there being a "Classical Dynamics Day" during our senior year.) Cindy Campbell and Ben Braswell sat at the table behind Peggy and me. I don't remember who else was in the class. I remember learning what enzymes were and how the TV commercials for enzyme laundry detergents at the time were using the same "little keys to unlock stains" explanation that Mrs. Avery said they'd been using in biology class for years. I remember going out into the woods behind MV for SOMETHING in that class but I don't remember what. Just looking at all the wildlife, I guess. Counting squirrels & weeds. No traumatic tire deflations involved however. (Mike, if it was someone in your class, I imagine Swain's reaction has stuck with them all these years and every so once in a while they'll wince at the memory of the pain they caused that man. Either that or they grew up to be jerks.) I remember marvelling at looking at my own cheek cells under the microscope and realizing that they were every bit "me" as the "me" that was looking through the microscope at them. They tell ya yer made of cells and then, blam, there they are, stained a faint blue on a slide, looking up at you and saying "Water! Water! Aaaaaauuuuggghhhh....." And I remember "endoplasmic reticulum"...... Now, for chemistry.... (maybe next time)

Peek-A-Boo ! Here I is. What's up gang...? I have been around just not online much. I see a few of y'all were in "my hood" Sat. night. Unfortunately I was in Ashburn last night at a friends B-Day party and was unable to "hook" up with y'all. A place called The Ashburn Pub..Pretty cool. Things in Springfield are the same..Alot of building (roads) and a real pain in the a**. What's this about a meal with the girls? Not me. Although I met with Andretta Raso a couple of weeks ago down at Gekko's in Occoquan. That was fun. Other than that...All's the same. My wife and I are going to Paula Thomas' mothers on the fourth for her annual picnic/Summers B-Day party. Hope everyone has a great 4th and I'll see y'all online soon. Dewey, my memory isn't so great these days, but I do believe we had ES with Mrs. Harding our freshman year. If I'm not mistaken, we had several classes together over the 4 yrs at MV. I remember Mr. Swain's biology class my sophomore year. Not one of my teammates would dissect that #@!!* frog! That trauma will last forever! Hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th!!

I know that feeling Dave -- the nerve of SOME clients to think they should close ON July 1st. I pouted the entire time thinking of where I could be. No Mike -- I do NOT remember by senior science class -- I had chemistry with Mascolinko (sp.). It was right after lunch and I took my afternoon nap. Still came out with an A tho -- thank god that man graded on a curve. Scary tho ... asleep I did better than those that stayed awake. As to my memory of some OTHER events during high school, you're memory is better than mine and you weren't even there. As to OTHER memories from my senior year, I share those ONLY with the thespians and gymnasts in our crowd since the apparent BIG MOUTH you got your information from wasn't involved in the slightest bit in THOSE escapades -- which actually were probably the juciest parts of my life way back when -- keep your trap shut Colella !! The stuff you have is just normal teenage dating stuff -- well normal for some of us. And we don't get into the stories you relayed to me about YOUR escapades ((wink)). So there, Mike Write your Chapter 4 -- but I hardly think it'll be a best seller. :P:::::::::::

Sorry about last nite John. I ended up working until 8pm and after 12 hours of this stuff here I just headed for home. As you can see I'm back in here again today. Closing down a project that has been around about 15 years takes some time. More so since it's all been classified work. 3 and 1/2 more weeks is what we are slotted for then I will be on to my new project somewhere else in Chantilly. See you Thurs nite.........

But wait, there's more-I have happier MV Science memories!! Jump ahead to our senior year-Physics class with Mr. Price. My lab partners are Kathy Haaser, Sharon Hebert, and Rich Perkins. Of course everyone who had Mr Price learned a lot about Physics! (Yeah, right!!) Well-I especially didn't because at the back of the room sat Mike Carson and Rita Hunt and I spent most of my time in the back with them. Rita had many good stories, but Mike really had some-after all, he was dating Janine! I don't know how Mike's memory is-but I KNOW Janine's is still good (even though she has no reason to remember her science classes as well as I do!!) Anyway, Janine is Chapter 4 in my book when it finally goes to print (Yes, Janine the WHOLE CHAPTER!). Looking forward to seeing everyone at Peyton Place tonight and HAPPY 4TH TO THE REST OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great, Dewey's back and he's taking us down MV Science Memory Lane. My 1st year at MV-10th grade-last period-Mr. Swain's Biology class. (My lab partners Richard Colella, Randy Dietzel and Tyler Fadley [what a group!]). One day we had a a class field trip; we walked behind MV to the pond and he drove. Mr Swain had us collecting "junk" out of the pond. It was a Friday. The following Monday we get to class and he jumps all over us. Someone let the air out of his tires and he was upset because he thought we must not like him and he never had a class that felt that way before. He told us his wife was in the hospital with cancer and he was suppose to go there after school but he had to have his car towed and didn't make it that day. He almost cried. No one thought anyone else in our class did it. Of course, if they did-they wouldn't admit it.

And for those of you expecting some obscure MVHS memory detail from me: The Earth Science class was actually called "ESCP" for "Earth Sciences Curriculum Program". Kent Donovan was my lab partner and we sat near the middle, on the left side of the room (facing Mrs. Harder). (Though I find I have a recollection of starting the year sitting at the front right.) Seating was chairs at a "table for two". Every week we had to bring in some news article on science we had cut out of the newspaper. The first quiz or exam included definitions of various sciences, e.g. "glaciology". One of the first topics covered was astronomy (which is why I'm good with the autumn/winter constellations but no good with the spring/summer constellations.) I had trouble understanding one of Kepler's Laws of planetary motion (the one that dealt with equal areas in equal times). One of the lab exercises was measuring the size of the Earth (or at least a globe) by sticking darts on it and measuring the angle of shadow from the sun on it. Another set of labs involved the "stream table" where we would siphon water out of jugs into long plastic bins that had sand in them so we could watch erosion in action. The biggest challenge was getting the oxbow lake to form. And another exam involved identifiying rocks and minerals. There was a different rock at each person's seat and we'd have a minute to identify it and then we'd all get up and rotate around the room one seat and have a minute to identify the next one. By the end of the test we'd be back in our own seats having seen every rock. (This amazes me now. I think I'd be able to identify "quartz" and "not quartz".) Would that I could trade remembering all that for something USEFUL! ;^)

Well, it appears that my latest time machine design actually worked. I managed to jump 3 1/2 months into the future. Now if I can just figure out how to get this damn thing into REVERSE so I can go back to March and catch up on this Guest Book, I'll really have something! I'm missing out on all your concerts but caught a few of my own. I took a trip back to Cambridge around Memorial Day and of the 16 days I was there, 10 of them involved going to music shows. The Memorial Day weekend is "The Cutting Edge of the Campfire" music festival at Club Passim there and they have a continuous cycle of performers from noon until past 1 am for all 4 days. I caught just about it all (~90 performers). Then when I got back to Colorado I found that the Mars Society was running a bit behind and could use some help building their Mars Arctic Research Station (catchy acronym) so I spent the next week and a half in a fiberglass factory doing the blue collar thing. I'm not used to coming home from "work" everyday needing a shower and laundry. But we got it finished and shipped in time. It's on it's way to Canada - considerably farther north than where Ruth will be since there will be no sunsets there in the summer. For more info, checkout www.marssociety.com and read about the "Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station". Next week my nephew, (16 year-old son of Grady, MVHS '69), will be coming out to Colorado for a visit. He's spent his whole life living in No. Va. and I think it'll be good to expand his horizons some. I'm glad to see new names participating in this web site. Welcome, Robin. Weren't we in the same Earth Science class with Mrs. Harder freshman year? Enjoy your concerts, folks and have a happy 4th! Say an "oooooh" and an "aaaaaah" for me.

I dunno John, do you think it's going to be just you and me for Saturday? I'm willing to bet we can talk Janine into it, but even she hasn't logged in yet. At this point I'm just worried that EVERYONE ELSE has received directions to Ruth's for the weekend and mine will show up too late on Monday (See Ruth,I'm still holding out hope!) I can see it now - most of my MV classmates having drinks on the veranda at Ruth's watching the Canadian sunset and I'm sitting in a little smoke-filled room by myself and getting drunk because not only have my fellow classmates not shown up but neither has the band! The juke box is only playing country and western tunes and all the women here have big blonde buffont hairdos. Oh wait-I see Gary walking thru the door! It's not Gary it's Dewey!! HEY BARTENDER BRING ME ANOTHER DRINK

What breakfast with the ladies????!!! As for Saturday Night, Mike brings up a good point - "smoke filled" would do me in too...plus I'd never get Debbie into a place like that. How about a venue report after Saturday John?

- Friday, June 30, 2000 at 13:22:07 (EDT)
Mike-I haven't checked out the place during the live music night. I have been in the place, though. It is very small--don't know how they get a band in there. I have a hunch, though, that the patrons on Saturday night might have a slightly different demographical makeup than their "normal" weeknight dinner/social hour makeup. The jukebox is almost all country rock/country. I'd have dinner first. It should have that crowded, frat-houseparty feel. ToGA!

Speaking of Dewey, where's Gary?? He could walk to the place! Steve: Did you bury him in one of those cement columns in the mixing bowl for not inviting us to breakfast with the ladies???

John-Sat the 1st sounds like fun. Saw your posting on May 31 about checking out Peyton Place-Have you done that yet or were you waiting to check it out as a group?!? In other words-just how smokey is it? My lungs still haven't forgiven me for all the smoke-filled discos I took them to in the 70s!!.....The only thing that could keep me away is the arrival any minute now of Ruth's directions to her Canadian paradise. Since we received the invitation, I've been eagerly checking my mailbox but as of today-nothing! However, I'm sure I'll hear something soon...

Well okie dokie ... I've now scrolled back through the ENTIRE month of June -- I have John's directions from that post now. Thanks for the address, etc., Dave. Ruthie --- I've being wondering the same thing. Where is that memory-like-a-steel-trap wonder of ours anyway? Incidentally, I ran into Mr. Jones not too long ago -- he now sports quite a beard AND an earring and bids all of you a fond hello.

Saturday night sounds like fun. I WOULD be jealous if not for the fact that I will be counting maple leaves, sipping boat drinks, reading trashy novels, taking a bit of sun, perhaps a little water skiing and generally enjoying life in the cool Canadian wilderness while you folks are thumping your feet to the oldies. It's a tough trade, but if any of you Peyton Place and America junkies want to join me instead, you're welcome. Oh yeah, I've been meaning to ask: Where the heck is Dewey?

Glad to see all the new old folk out there!!!! What a difference 25 to 30 years makes. (technology wise that is) Countdown to America on July 6th! We'll be a small group (10), But to any of you others out there, there are still tickets if you change your mind. Just call the Birchmere or Ticketmaster..................... Steve, I will be starting a new job (within TRW) at the end of July. I will be working directly for the same customer your wife works for in Chantilly. All web based work (JAVA) on NT machines, sort have gotten used to UNIX based platforms on Sun workstations. Sort of looking forward to the new digs though... except for no windows AGAIN I thought with all the new security technology those days had gone the way of the DoDo Bird. Well got to go and tie up the loose ends and get this project closed down and shrinked wraped for the shelfs at Nat'l Archives....

Janine, thanks! I'm not worried about the MV gang having my number...I had been reading some of the '97 stuff & realized I shouldn't have stuck my phone no. out there!! Since I just found this site yesterday, I've been so excited to be "in touch". I've not seen any of you since graduation! I don't have a pc at home, but have decided I need one now! Of course I'm still at work using the pc! My boss is here as well. She's working and I'm playing! I have been reading the older entries in an effort to find out what's been happening!!!!!

Robin-It would be great to have someone to ride with on the rollercoasters; I just hope it's OK with your cardiologist. Janine-What does YOUR doctor think about 2 MV outings in the same month? Since you said you don't get out much, this won't be too much of a strain on you, will it? If it is we can JUST go dancing that night and we'll let you tell the band when to go home!--just like at H&H Xmas parties!)

This is really something else! Never thought I'd be able to find classmates from high school! I actually went home last night and pulled out my yearbook from the ol' cedar chest, and reminisced for hours! I have missed all the reunions, but I want to go to the next one! Since graduation I've lived in Texas, Georgia, Hawaii, N.C. and now in Richmond. That makes it difficult to keep up! I am actually going to Manassas tomorrow (Sat. 6/24) to visit family. I would love to hear from y'all!

Send him off the the Class of '81 homepage -- those people DEFINITELY do not get enough action! Robin !!! Glad you decided to find us -- of course we usually converse long enough and loud enough for the world to hear and find us. OK .. SOME of us do. Mike? Close that door hun. Would be great of you to join us on an outing -- ANY outing for that matter. STEVE?!?!? Are you paying attention? Check that calendar yet - you and Deb willing to brave a roller coaster with Ruthie? John? You're mysteriously quiet as of late. Hmmmmmmmmm. And yup ... we must have lost Gary in the islands. Dave? Oh Sue -- SAY IT ISN'T SO -- a whining, sobbing 44 year old is NOT a pretty thing (and before you smarta**es say anything -- yes .. I'm staying 44). Speaking o which -- Steve? September 15 is a Friday this year -- although I've not seen the athletic schedule, I can pretty much guess. Celebrate at a football game? ehhhhhh ... we'll have to think about that. Don't have the schedule for the 16th yet either -- will keep you posted - I think it's a grand idea. On the other hand -- July 6th is fast approaching -- I'M SO EXCITED !!! (I don't get out much).

Hi Robin! I see you've been working in health care too! Hi Janine! great ideas for summer fun. My sisters and I just finalized plans for our mini-reunion at Myrtle Beach for that same week, however...Don't mean to burst your bubble....And as for senility, Janine, you are wondering how I could have mistaken Pokemon for a classmate?? If myyy memory serves me correctly, Steve Hall is Pokeman....vendor of controversial Pokemon! Looks like Steve is off somewhere playing hookie! (or Pokemon?)

Hello, Robin. Hi, Sue. Ruth-thanks for finding the cliche for me and you are right, Janine has left that door W-I-D-E open. Now where should I begin???? Oh that one would be too easy!! At least she and I are getting senile at the same time-and at this rate we will both be shopping for rocking chairs together! Janine-I have never thought about me being flushable!! Interesting concept though. So flush me down to Busch Gardens because that sounds like a great idea. I can do it on the 15th, but would have to leave the morning of the 16th as I have to be back home in the afternoon. Of course I would still find time to get together at brunch. Unless Ms. Social Director Janine drags us out at the crack of dawn for breakfast-she does like to stick to her schedule, you know!!

Ruthie!!!! You've GOT to be kidding?!?!!? You COULD actually be talked into such a thing? Must be the up and down and turn and twist of the roller coaster action. Can ya pick Sue up on your way?? Huh? huh? huh? Well gang? Whatcha think? Group rates and discounts are available for 10 rooms -- so do we have 10 daring people out there that would get on a roller coaster with Ruthie? I'm certainly not brave enough to go THAT far. Maybe we could even flush Mike out to make a PERSONAL appearance now that he's "found" the website. Interesting concept -- flushing Mike that is. ((wink)) Now be nice Michael!!

What a great idea Janine! I wonder what made you think of it? Interestingly enough, the week starting July 10 DOES hold a slight possibility of a Dominion State road trip for me. Of course I'm not sure I'd want to waste my time with YOU folks, but I might be talked into it. In the "Eat Your Heart Out" category, during the week prior to that, I'll be vacationing in Canada enjoying cool weather and even colder Canadian beer. (This might not sound as exciting as the Grand Prix Steve, but -- if predictions are accurate -- it won't be as wet either)

OK .... let's see ... July 6th ... Birchmere. You would THINK with all the "fun" stuff we have to do in this area and in the state of Virginia generally we could all find something to do together. Hmmmmm... does Busch Gardens have a group rate? We could actually drag our families? Group rate at a hotel? Fun in the sun for the kids and the grown up can catch up and play too? Mini-reunion? Heck -- all our kids want to go there anyway -- might as well kill two birds with one stone? How bout the weekend of July 10? Roadtrip Ruthie? Sue ??? Gary? They DO have a small arena there with country music -- I'd go with ya!! Alright .... alright ... just a thought.

Only back a couple days and already Janine isn't speaking to me, Mike thinks I'm proficient at spouting cliches, John is gigging me with yet another concert that I can't attend and Steve is taunting me with stories of the fabulous race weekend in Montreal that I missed. DAG! With friends like these, who needs enemies (at least I came up with a cliche for you Mike)

Janine and Steve-I only said I'm not senile, but I do admit to being slow!! Oh Well, Better late than never. Timing is eveything.--I'm sure there are many more cliches, but they are just not coming to mind. So, Ruth, how about some help? Since you are home for 15 more days, coming up with a couple more cliches can help fill your time-as if working, spending time with your family, enjoying the Florida weather, and catching up on the laundry won't give you enough to do!

Come on Mike. I've been telling you about this web-site for over two years! Of course we haven't talked for months so I'll give you a break and allow for the CRS factor. Regardless, we need the gossip boost that only you can provide! We're ready for the 6th Dave - can't wait. Janine, I sent you an e-mail after the June 4 Dover race. Did you not receive it??? I was there right in the front row at Start/Finish thinking you and wondering if you were there also. The weather was certainly better there then it was for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. I returned from there yesterday and I still haven't dried out. Nothing like Formula One cars at speed in the rain - scary stuff. This is your kinda racing I'm sure Ruth as long as you don't mind getting wet. OK, Janine. Name a time and place and I'm there - or - I'll just show up at your office like last time!

Before you think I'm losing it or getting senile-After I left my first message, I didn't see anything on the guest book. I hit the refresh button and nothing happened. I checked it later in the day and still nothing, so I retyped it and added some. Was I suprised when I double-checked my 2nd message and saw both of them. Oh well, I'm a rookie and I'll get the hang of this! So there you have it-I am not getting senile and repeating things, repeating things. Watch it, Janine-I know you are giggling so no comments please!!

What a great web page! I'm finally catching up to it. Frank-I'm sorry to hear about your mother. What a shock to find out about Cliff. I remember his mother passed away about 1 1/2 years ago, so it must be especially hard for the Roop family. Cliff was a person we all have many memories of, and I also have fond memories of Mrs Roop. She always looked out for me at lunch time and made sure I was well fed. As important as the food was, it still held second place to our lunch table's entertainment by Richard Colella, Dewey, and Dr. Woods. (I've been reading some of the past guest book entries and this should get Dewey back-or I may be forced to share some lunch stories with everyone!) On second thought-forget that idea-I was no angel and Dewey does have an EXCELLENT memory! Hope everyone is doing well and staying out of trouble!!!

Thanks for the reminder -- I was about ready to post a question as to "when" but wasn't quite ready to feel that stupid. Now that the dentist drugged me today ... I just don't care. Gary? I've seen you online ... I know you ARE functioning out there -- SOMEWHERE. Ohhhhhhhhh Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevie -- it's about time for lunch or have you decided to spend your lunch hours further training Lucy for her flyball championships. Give my best to Deb!! John? You're awfully quiet lately dear. OK SUE -- I know you've been online -- I've gotten mail ... I've talk to you .... but ...... lurking? Soooo ... we flush out Ruthie only to have her immediately disappear. Frank? My best wishes to you and your family during your difficult time.

John, I guess I should have known that you couldn't resist. Thanks. I'll sleep in my own bed tonight, but I'm off again tomorrow. The good news is that this next road trip is the last one on the immediate horizon so when I get home again I'll get a bit of a break for a while. Once I get my undies unpacked and reacquaint myself with my children, I should have some time to tease and torture the rest of you again. I bet you can't wait. Gosh it's nice to be missed......

I AM NOT sulking (and I've nearly got the whining and whimpering under control). Mostly, I've been on the road with Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show and Legislative Review. For some inexplicable reason, people seem to want to know what actually happened during the legislative session. In my opinion, wanting to know what happened during the session is roughly equivalent to wanting to know how sausage is made -- a subject that is definately NOT for the squeamish. Nevertheless, I have been visiting some of the more rustic corners of the Sunshine State TRYING to explain it to them (with minimal success). Indeed, I just put my suitcase BACK in the car so I can head to my next road show. I get back Tuesday night, leave for the next one on Wednesday morning. While I'm down here working my butt off, I hope the rest of you enjoy your little concerts and play days. I AM NOT jealous and I AM NOT sulking.

Just discovered that "It's a Beautiful Day" will be playing at Jaxx in West Springfield on Sunday, August 6, for $20! Looks like a very musical summer for me!

Heard Jonathan Edwards live on the radio this morning. Turns out he is going to play at the Birchmere tomorrow night at 6:30 before Jesse Colin Young, and also at the Fairfax Fair. My wife and I are going to the Birchmere. Hope to see some familiar faces there!

Janine, I think the Florida legislators totally stripped Ruth of her sense of humor. I think she's still sulking.

Well geez .... ya take a break for a while and ya manage to miss out on a chance to party with really great people. ((pout )) That'll teach me. Actually, I was busy getting ready to get lost in the land of [whateverthatwas] twang and nonsensical lyrics that Steve was talking about this past Sunday at FedEx field. As I sat there amazesd at the mass number of teenagers that were there for this Country Music Fest (which they informed me came in the category of 'Hip Crossover Artists') I recall it suddenly dawning on me that Gary was undoubtedly SOMEWHERE in that crowd. AND .. just how WOULD find a Hudson in a crowd that big. I used to be pretty darn good at finding all the Hudson's in a large crowd but this one was a TAD beyond the size of the crowd I used to be able to locate them in. UNLIKE some others, I manage to enjoy ALL types of music and haven't limited myself one iota. Besides .... the general manager of one of our radio stations federal expressed me some FANTASTIC tickets on Friday and ... well... client development, ya know ... I just couldn't resist. Besides, I'm a sucker for guys in leather pants or tight jeans and cowboy boots. (Must be all those years in Colorado and Wyoming -- go figure). I'm up for dinner and drinks at the Birchmere that night too Dave. Then again, if its the ONLY way we can manage to get this crowd together for coffee again -- I'll be wherever to pick up the ticket over coffee or that breakfast bar again. And... by the way ... anyone seen Ruthie lately? Has she emerged from her 110' of legistative reading? And ... hmmmm... Sue has also been conspicuously absent. And Steve? Fine ... I haven't wanted to do lunch lately anyway -- you're about 3 weeks late or more by MY calculation bud!!!!! {{{HUMPFR}}}}

The Birchmere opens at 17:00 (5pm) Drinks can be had until the hall opens at 6pm. We (Holly, Cindy and myself plan on having dinner at the Birchmere. We hope that everyone else is planning on eating there too. If you want your tickets early as to not be commited to get there early for drinks and dinner we need to have a small get together before hand. As I said before money is not the issue. We can settle the nite of the show or at a later date! It's all about getting together with old friends and listing to good music in the flesh!!! I can even mail the tickets to you if you wish, just post your home address or email it to me at dave.nermyr@trw.com. By the way Steve I'm under Bob Martino now I understand you are also the COTR for some of the work they (TRW) are doing as well as the Program Director on the government side for DARPA (I've been to the DARPA website). Congrats Steve!! you have done well.

Dave, With regard to the America get together I'm not sure what ideas you are looking for but if applicable I suggest that we get together earlier that day at a place to be determined or at the Birchmere itself.
