Reunion Committee Announcements

March 14, 2001 Update

Several members of the Reunion Committee recently got together to begin making arrangements for our THIRTY-YEAR REUNION!! We met at a potential venue for the reunion that looks very promising to all committee members that were able to show up. However, we thought it more pressing to discuss the date of the reunion. The past three reunions were held on a July 4 weekend. While all the past reunions were a great success, some classmates have not attended previous reunions because the reunion was on that weekend. So, we discussed whether it's time to break the mold and try another weekend. The general consensus was that since all the other reunions were so successful, why break the mold? It is the only holiday weekend in the summer when there is no school. There is less competition from business events for reunion venues and travel, and hotel accommodations. (Wedding events are the main competition, and are booked way in advance. Therefore, we have a pressing need to act early to get the best venue.)

Many of our classmates who were not able to attend the last reunion already had plans for July 4 before they knew about the reunion. This may have been due mostly to the late planning of our last reunion. We therefore felt that if a date were picked early enough, people would not already have plans, and could choose whether or not to attend based upon their own desire. However, some Classmates use that weekend every year for set plans. The consensus was that a reunion only happens every five to ten years, so for the very few classmates that couldn't take a year off from their set plans every five years or so to come to our reunion, so be it. This would seem to affect only a very minimal number of classmates.

The other issue with the July 4th "weekend" of 2002 is that July 4th is on a Thursday. This date could therefore provide, effectively, a FOUR-day weekend! Our potential venues provide the possibility of a great location to view the fireworks in DC again (like our Twenty-year reunion), if the dinner is held on Thursday, July 4 -- and a rest day on Friday before a picnic on Saturday, July 6th. This makes travel a breeze for out-of-towners, allows a day of rest between events, or a casual day to sight see and/or visit the homes of fellow classmates -- but it requires another day or so of hotel accommodations. Changing to a cheaper hotel after the dinner, or making arrangements to stay with friends or family could offset this expense.

The other possibility is to have the dinner on Friday, July 5th, and pray for a rain delay of the fireworks until Friday. This would require having to get up for a picnic event the following day after a late night before, yet make travel plans easier and accommodations cheaper.

Another possibility is that most people wouldn't care, and would choose either to attend or not attend for reasons not having to do with the time or expense.

Another concern is financial. A significant venue deposit and other out-of-pocket expenses are required to make a reunion happen. This expense and risk of loss is personally taken on by Reunion Committee members, in addition to the other work they do. To minimize the stress on Committee members, the Committee would like to solicit contributions from other classmates. Any up-front contributions would, of course, be subtracted from the cost of reunion events. All members of the Reunion Committee are local, and don't have significant travel or hotel expenses to get here, so we are rather distant from those worries. However, we are not insensitive to them, and wish to provide plans to enable as many classmates as possible to attend.

A selection of email buttons has been provided on this page to make it easier to address your concerns and/or desires to the Committee. It is your reunion. Help make it what you want it to be. Let the Committee know, even if you are in agreement with the plans. But PLEASE, use the above email option rather than the Guestbook to communicate your concerns and/or desires. The Committee has a lot to do. Make their decisions easier for them. We want everyone to have a GREAT TIME!!

Hope to hear from you!

August 16, 2001 Update

The Reunion Committee is pleased to announce a date and venue have been selected for our

Thirty-year Reunion!!!

A contract has been signed with the newly renovated and expanded Mt. Vernon Inn for a reunion dinner on Friday night, July 5, 2002!

The Committee is hoping to land the large Pavilion at Ft. Hunt Park for our picnic event the next day (Saturday, July 6th) -- and is also trying to coordinate a class visit to the Plant during the same weekend. Also, hotel arrangements and budgeting are being hashed out. Every attempt is being made to accommodate as many classmates as possible for our next reunion.

The next Committee meeting will be held in late September. Stay tuned for further info -- but more importantly, set aside the next July 4th weekend to

Get back to where you once belonged!!

The "PLANT" TOUR, the PICNIC, and the PARTING
Saturday, July 6, 2002
THE TOUR (Tentative)
If you are an early riser, we’re trying to arrange a tour of "The Plant" for Saturday morning. However, this cannot be confirmed until next year. If you stay up too late, no problem. The picnic doesn’t start until Noon.

THE PICNIC
The picnic is scheduled to be held at Ft. Hunt Park on Saturday, July 6th, from 12:00PM - 4:00PM. (Since park reservations cannot be made until 2002, this location remains tentative for now.) Food, drinks, and games will be provided. Bring your body and Advil.

SPECIAL SOUVENIRS
The Reunion Committee is working on a few surprises. One will be a give-away for each adult that attends both dinner & picnic. Other prizes will be also given away during the dinner. Everyone will have the option to purchase one or more souvenirs. More details will follow.

ADMINISTRIVIA

PAYMENT
We need everyone's help here. The Mt. Vernon Inn has specified a minimum number of meals that must be purchased for both the prices they offered, and for our exclusive use of the Inn for dinner. Therefore, we are establishing a financial incentive for early registration and payment.

The following is a per-person list of fees for the events that excludes prices for additional items such as T-shirts, coffee mugs, art, directories, etc.:

If payment received: Dinner
Only
Dinner &
Picnic
Picnic Only
(over age 11)
Picnic Only
(age 11 & under)
by March 1st: $60 $72 $12 no charge
after March 1st: $70 $90 $20 no charge

Details for remitting payment will be provided in the near future. Stay tuned to this web site.

Due to lead time requirements for souvenirs, printing of directories, and committal to a final head count for the Inn, we do not plan to accept registration and payment for dinner attendance after June 1st -- SO PLAN EARLY and PAY EARLY!

REGISTRATION FORM
A Reunion registration form with instructions for remitting payment will be posted on our Class web site. We will also e-mail a hyperlink to everyone for which we have a valid email address (e.g., click here to go to the Class of 72 Reunion Registration Page). Keep checking the "Class of 72" web site.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS
The MT. VERNON INN does not provide overnight accommodations. The Reunion Committee is presently working to provide a list of suggested hotel arrangements for out-of-towners, with possible transportation to and from events. This information will be provided on this web site as soon as it is put together. We also plan to provide a roommate matching service for those wishing to share room arrangements. Keep checking the "Class of 72" web site for further details.

CANCELLATION
Payments can be refunded for cancellations made up to May 5, 2002. Cancellations made after May 5th may be refunded only at the discretion of the Reunion Committee, taking into consideration the financial situation at the time.

FORCE MAJEURE
Given the state of affairs in the world, anything could happen between now and July 5, 2002. There is always the possibility that some or all of the events might have to be cancelled due to circumstances beyond the control of the Reunion Committee. Some deposits (made out of pocket by the Reunion Committee) are non-refundable. Therefore, there is a remote yet possible risk that we may not get 100% of our money back for unforeseen cancellation of events. We all share in this risk -- but no one, including the organizers of these events, should share “more equally” than others.

QUESTIONS
If you have any questions, please use the Reunion Committee email buttons above to contact the Reunion Committee.

January 27, 2002 Update

The Reunion Committee expects to roll out its web announcement by the end of next weekend (Feb 2nd), if not earlier. Because it is taking longer than busy people expected to get things buttoned down, the Committee will be extending the deadline for the previously mentioned price break from March 1 to March 15. In the meantime, there are still a lot of missing classmates to be found.

February 5, 2002 Update

The Reunion Invitation has been modified to further specify the cost of shipping multiple Reunion souvenirs to anyone that needs the items mailed.

The Invitation and Registration form have been modified for better behavior when using Netscape.

March 16, 2002 Update

The Reunion Invitation has been modified to specify that the cutoff date for receiving dinner/picnic reservations is June 1, 2002. Also, the deadline for receiving merchandise orders is May 15, 2002, whether or not a dinner/picnic reservation is made. So, if you are coming to the Reunion and want some of the souvenirs, it is recommended that you get both orders in by May 15th!

Also, the Invitation has been changed to indicate a different meeting area for the picnic at Ft. Hunt Park. We were not able to reserve the large pavilion for the date we wanted. (Reservation of the large pavilion on the date we wanted was only to be accepted, so they say, after our Reunion Invitation was announced!) Arrangements are being made to provide party tent(s) for shelter from the sun or rain in "Area C-1" that we were able to reserve.

March 21, 2002 Update

The Reunion Committee has extended the deadline for the dinner/picnic price breaks from March 15th to April 15th. The Invitation and Registration Form have been modified to incorporate this change.
