The battery box was all but gone, no coffee can patches here.
There was what appeared to be a rubber door mat under the battery.
A rust-proof repair?
The bulkhead was much better than the
battery box, mostly surface rust. This only extended
up an inch or so. I cut out all that had even surface rust.
Gave it a couple good coats of weld-thru primer and
installed the new metal. 
I fabricated the new pieces from 14 gauge steel.
The new metal overlaps the inside. This makes for a
less noticeable seam that is a lot less prone to collecting water.
 
Then all that was left was stripping to bare metal
and a little primer. Just like new, other than a couple of
seams that didn't used to be there.
