AN INTERESTING HISTORY

A Citizen of Denison Who Had Seen Much of the World

Dr. George W. Glover died at 3:46 yesterday afternoon of cancer of the neck, after a long and painful illness. Dr. Glover had an interesting and checkered career. He was born in 1821 on the Island of Malta and was the son of a French father and Grecian mother. At an early age he enlisted in the French navy and served under the hospital steward and thus acquired a taste for medicine, which influenced him in the choice of a profession. He emigrated to America some time in the forties, having before that time circumnavigated the globe. In 1851 he was married in Indiana to the lady who survives him. When the war broke out, he enlisted in the Union army and served as assistant surgeon throughout the conflict. Shortly after the termination of hostilities he located in Beaver, Ill. and thence moved to Washington, D.C., where in 1867 he joined a K. of P. lodge and remained a member of that organization until his death. In 1870 he abandoned the practice of medicine and took to preaching for the United Brethren Church at Annapolis Ind. His subsequent career covered periods of residence in Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. In 1889 he came to Denison and engaged in the practice of medicine. Three years ago the cancer which caused his death made its appearance, and progressed so rapidly that three months ago he was compelled to take his bed from which he never arose.

He leaves a widow, a son, Wm. C. Glover, who is employed in the Katy machine shops, and a daughter, Mrs. Louisa Prunell, a resident of this city.

The remains of the deceased were interred at 2 o'clock this afternoon in Oakwood cemetery, Knights of Pythias and members of the Grand Army uniting in paying funeral honors to the dead.

[NOTE: Another story in our family is that he was born in Burma, where his parents were missionaries, and that he was raised by an uncle, John Glover, in Ohio. The Burma story could be a misremembering of Malta -- they sound sort of alike -- and someone could have inferred that his parents were missionaries as a reason for them to have been in Burma. I have done a little casual research into missionaries in Burma, and did not find any named Glover.]

[I may be wrong about his middle name being Washington. Washington, or indeed anything beginning with a W, is not a French name.]

Johann Ulrich Knoyer, known as Ulrick, b: Abt 1758 in York Co, PA was the son of Anna Barbara and Leonhardt / Leonhard / Leonard Kneyer / Gnarr. There are many variations of this German name, incl. Gnarr, Gnaur, Kneyer, Knoyer, Kaunauer, Conoyer, Kanawyer.

Wife: Elizabeth. One genealogy of her son John Ludwig says that she was Elizabeth KITZMILLER, but it also says that his wife was named KITZMILLER and her mother was also an Elizabeth KITZMILLER, and his stepmother was also Elizabeth KITZMILLER (the same one?) so there is a possibility of confusion. Or maybe Ulrick married his son's mother-in-law. However, this was five years after his son married her daughter, so it's not like the son married his stepsister.
