Divorce statistics available free from state governments
(Part of the Divorce Reform Page)
People working on divorce issues should know that their states' Vital Statistics
departments often publish statistics about divorce and related problems.
It is common for departments to publish free annual compilations of their
state's vital statistics. An example is reported in this recent Lone
Star Report:
> New vital statistics book reveals interesting Texas trends <
Ever wonder whether the divorce rate in Texas is up or down? Whether
abortions are more or less common than they used to be? What's killing folks
around the state?
Well, the state prints a book just for you. Each year the Department of
Health publishes "Texas Vital Statistics," detailing facts and
figures about Texans and our state.
This year's report, which uses 1995 data, reveals both ominous trends and
causes for hope.
...
Alas, marriage rates are now at an all-time low. But on the positive side,
divorce rates are at their lowest point since 1972. On the average day in
1995, 487 couples tied the knot, while 266 got divorced. Apparently, those
who get married seem to want to stay that way. <-
