- 1. Cerdic, King of the West Saxons, 519-534, was a Saxon earldorman
who founded a settlement on the coast of Hampshire, England, in 495, assumed
the title of King of the West Saxons in 519, and became the ancestor of
the English royal line.

- 3. Cynric, son of Cerdic, was King of the West Saxons,
534-560.
- 4. Ceawlin, son of Cynric, undertook the government of
the West Saxons, 560 and reigned thirty winters.

- 13, Egbert, b. 775, d. after 19 Nov.838, son of Eahlmund,
King of Kent. Egbert was King of Wessex, 802-827, and was the first King
of all England, 827-836; m. Raedburh. The male line of kings descends
from him to Edward the Confessor and the female line to the present time.
- 14. Aethelwulf, King of England, 839-858, d. 13 Jan.858; m. (1)
Osburh, dau. of Oslac, the royal cup-bearer.
- 15. Alfred the Great, King of England,
871-901, b. Wantage, Berkshire, 849, d. 28 Oct.901; m. 868 (2) Ealhswith,
d. ca. 905, dau. of Earl Aethelred of Ilercia and Eadburh. He founded
the British Navy, organized the militia, compiled a code of laws and built
schools and monasteries.
