Harold Davenport)I have a deed dated Sept.8, 1859 in which my great grandparents James Madison DAVENPORT and his wife Celia Ann Spruill DAVENPORT sell a one-half share in the undivided lands of Gideon ALEXANDER, dec. to Jesse DAVIS. This deed is in the Washington County Courthouse. Gideon ALEXANDER's will is in the Tyrrell Courthouse. His will gives his widow, Mary, lifetime rights to the land she lives on. Gideon died in 1839 and his will was probated in 1840. From census records he would have been between 70 and 80 when he died. His will lists daughters Mary, Fanny, Nancy and Clarky. From Tyrrell county marriage bonds none of these ladies married a DAVENPORT. At least the first time. James Madison DAVENPORT's mother was named Nancy and when Gideon ALEXANDER died she was 55. If Gideon was closer to 80 than 70 when he died she could have been his daughter. Nancy ?? DAVENPORT died before 1860 and this probablly explains why her son was selling the share. Our family oral history has it that he was born in England in the early 1800's, was a King appointed hangman in London, a Merchant Ship's Master and eventually owned a 500 acre farm in Tyrell County in the 1860's. The farm retained the title "The Old Ellis Farm" for many years after his death in ~1867. His widow Adeline ( maiden name BAILEY) Ellis lost the farm due to non payment of taxes ~1869. They had three children; Franklin Dobbson ELLIS, John ELLIS and a girl (first name unknown). Franklin Dobbson ELLIS, my grandfater, died in the late 1930's. Franklin Dobbson ELLIS (called "Dobby") became a foster child of The SWAINS of Tyrell Co. and Adeline lived in the BAILEY household with the other two children, John ELLIS and his sister. We know that the 1929 Depression ruined Franklin Dobbson ELLIS and we suspect that the Civil war had something to do with David ELLIS' loss of his farm (and his subsequent death?). Anyway we would like to find out what we can about David, Adeline John and the girl. Thank you!

Her husband was Martin GARRETT who also lived in Washington Co. They had 9 children. Martin was dead before 1860 and Frances lived with her oldest son Armistead GARRETT for the rest of her life. He never married. Frances was born in Tyrrell Co. according to the death certificate of one of her sons.

Am trying to connect to Richard GARRETT of Chowan Co., NC. b:abt 1699. The name of the Negro left to Jemima is the same name that Richard GARRETT left in his will. I do not know Martin's father but strongly suspect he came from Tyrell. Martin married Frances FURLAUGH, daughter of unknown parents but probably of Washington County by way of Tyrrell. Frances was still alive in 1880 in Washington County living with her oldest son, Armistead GARRETT. I suspect Martin was a great-grandson of Daniel GARRETT who died in Tyrrell in 1858.

She originally married a LLUPTON and then married SWINDELL. I think it was J. Tom SWINDELL. My mother, Mildred LUPTON, was born in 1902. Her brothers were named Otis LUPTON and Cromwell LUPTON. I am 76 years old now and have not been back to Columbia in about 20 years. I know a Virginia Ann & Marion BRICKHOUSE that have recently moved back to Columbia and I believe Ida GIBBS, who lived in Columbia just passed away this year. Any information that you have on the above mentioned people would be greatly appreciated or if you could put me in the right direction as to whom to contact it also would be greatly appreciated. My father Cal GIBBS I think was born in Creswell ,NC. My grandmother on my fathers side was named Indiana GIBBS and her father was Robert Carson GIBBS. Looking forward to hearing from you.
