The Northwest Area Elementary School # 6 is a proposed new elementary school to serve the Germantown area of the County. The new school will be located on a 10-acre site a short distance west of MD Route 118 between Richter Farm and Riffleford Roads. The new school is being planned for an ultimate capacity for 740 students, with an initial capacity for 640 students when its scheduled to open in the Fall of 2001. This school will serve to relieve persistent overcrowding at several other elementary schools within the Northwest High School Cluster. Actual construction costs are projected to be in the $7-8 million range. |

The format for Architect selection is a mini-design competition with a focus on several functional aspects of the educational specification program. This approach is an attempt to encourage candidate architects to examine visionary conceptual alternatives that focus on the functional aspects of a 21st century school. The competition interviews were held Tuesday, December 15, 1998 with the first interview/presentation beginning at 9:00 a.m. Candidate firms were allotted 45-50 minutes to present its solution to the elements of the design competition program. Each presentation was followed with a 15-minute period for questions and answers. The Selection Committee will break for lunch after the forth interview for one-half hour. The final interview began around 2:00 p.m. The last interview will be followed with a discussion period during which key aspects of the design presentations will be discussed. The structured portion of the design competition program comprised facility design and project management elements in two major categories. Category 1, facility design components, comprised three aspects of the facility; overall building layout, interior building spaces, and site design. Category 2, project management considerations, focuses on four aspects of project management and implementation activities; design coordination, cost and value management, project implementation scheduling, and construction administration. A third open evaluation category allowed committee members to subjectively evaluate candidate firms on qualitative aspects of their presentations.
