The first version is the one I posted on various Internet newsgroups and submitted to Arab News as a "letter to the editor" for possible publication. The second version is the one actually published by ArabNews.com on Dec. 4, 2002, in its "letters" section. In an interesting coincidence, on the very next day after publication of this letter in ArabNews.com, King Fahd issued a statement which approximates some of these same basic ideas, namely that Islam requires mercy and prohibits terrorism (against peaceful peoples.) NOTE THE CONDITIONAL PROHIBITION OF TERRORISM! The Original Letter, As Submitted Terrorist Murderers Bring Discredit To Allah, Shame To Islam Neither Israeli offenses nor U. S. arrogance can ever justify terrorist murderers, who bring discredit to Allah and shame to Islam. Allah is supposed to be merciful; but where is the mercy in terrorist murder? Allah is supposed to be just; but where is the justice in deliberately blowing up women and school children? In Islam, there is supposed to be "no compulsion in religion;" but the concept of jihad has now been twisted to mean nothing less than war against all non-Muslims. In Islam, "good Jews and good Christians" are supposed to have nothing to fear; but merely being Jewish or Christian now has become a reason to be killed. The cowardly silence of rational Muslims is deafening. The screaming fanatics have claimed Islam for themselves. Does anyone really think Allah is pleased by these events? As the leading promoter and financial supporter of Islam worldwide, the government of Saudi Arabia now risks the wrath of Allah and the condemnation of the civilized world if it does not directly intervene to stop terrorist murderers by all means possible. Merely pretending is not enough. Rev. Bill McGinnis, Alexandria, Virginia, US published 4 December 2002 The King Fahd Message Fahd calls for projecting true picture of Islam By a Staff Writer JEDDAH, 5 December 2002 Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd yesterday urged Muslims all over the world to project the true picture of Islam, a religion of peace, tolerance and mercy. "Islam is a religion of mercy and a source of prosperity for the whole mankind," said King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah, deputy premier and commander of the National Guard, in a joint Eid Al-Fitr message. "Islam has prohibited aggression against (peaceful) people and terrorizing them," the message said. The king and the crown prince hoped that the international community would back the Saudi-initiated Arab peace plan, endorsed by the Beirut summit, to establish lasting peace and stability in the region. "We also hope that the return of international weapons inspectors to Iraq will bring about peace and security to the region and save Iraq and its people from danger and destruction," said the message, which was read out on Saudi Television by Information Minister Dr. Fouad Al-Farsy. The Supreme Judiciary Council announced yesterday that Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated in the Kingdom today after the sighting of Shawwal moon by a number of people yesterday evening. Most Arab countries including Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon, Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates will celebrate Eid today. King Fahd and Prince Abdullah, meanwhile, received messages of Eid greetings from US President George W. Bush and other world leaders including Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad ibn Khalifa and Iranian President Mohammed Khatami. In their Eid message, King Fahd and Prince Abdullah also urged Muslims to follow the teachings of Islam in all walks of life and set a good example for other communities. # # # http://www.LoveAllPeople.org
