Automotive Systems - All of the parts of the car which work together to accomplish any particular task make up the "system" of that task. So, for instance, the braking system is made up of all the parts of the car which work together to accomplish the task of braking. And the ignition system is made up of all the parts of the car which work together to accomplish the task of ignition, that is, creating the spark which ignites the fuel/air mixture in a gasoline engine.
All of the other systems of the car can be understood in the same way: - the parts which work together to accomplish a task make up the system of that task. So we have the suspension system and the air conditioning system and the cooling system and the electrical charging system and the emissions control system, all understood in the same way.
Please note that the same part can be a part of more than one system. For example, the oxygen sensor is part of the exhaust system, part of the emissions control system, and part of the powertrain control system.
Also please note that systems can overlap each other. For instance, the air conditioning system and the heating system are both parts of the temperature control system.
In fact, the whole idea of "systems" is nothing more than a mental device we use to understand how various processes work. Therefore, there can be no such thing as a "List Of All Systems In A Car," because such a list would be practically infinite in length, going down to the level of perhaps the "Right Front Doorlock Lever Retaining System." The number of "systems" would be exactly the same as the number of tasks performed in the car, and that number is very, very large.
Book publishers and automotive instructors usually try to make such a list of all systems because they need somehow to categorize all the parts of a car into neat boxes which do not overlap. (In Logic, they call such a scheme a "mutually exclusive and exhaustive" classification.) But any such list is really only a convenience for them, not a fixed "truth." But we are online, and we can access any piece of information directly, by linking to it! So we do not need to create any such artificial list of "mutually exclusing and exhaustive" categories! - Rev. Bill McGinnis
