You know in your heart that he should not actually be removed from office, but you are concerned that some other Republicans might consider you a traitor if you vote for acquittal. After all, you have made the decision to be a Republican, and you still believe in the Party despite the excesses of its more volatile elements. (We Democrats have volatile elements in our party, too, as you know.) So what can you do? How can you vote for acquittal and still be accepted as a Good Republican among your colleagues and constituents? Please consider this as a friendly suggestion from a fellow citizen, a citizen who wishes you well and wants you to succeed: The very safest, most reliable political cover for you is to base your explanation on a core value that almost everybody understands and accepts. You don't need to say that you approve of Bill Clinton or that you are happy he is President. And you don't need to criticize any of your fellow Republicans in any way. All you need to say is this: "In our system of justice, an accused person is presumed to be innocent of a crime until he is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. This presumption of innocence applies to all people, to presidents no less than to any other person. In my judgment, Clinton was not proven guilty of any crime beyond a reasonable doubt." That's all you have to tell anybody. Almost nobody can seriously criticize you for taking this position. Blessings to you as you continue to work for the happiness and well-being of all Americans.
