(Matthew 11:15 RSV) President Bill Clinton is a better Christian, by Bible standards, than most of his hard-core enemies are. Here's why I can say this, with proof from Scripture. 1. Clinton is filled with love, which is the essence of Christianity. But his hard-core enemies are filled with hatred, which is the antithesis of Christianity. He demonstrates his love by his good works for all people, particularly the lowly and the needy, as Jesus instructs all Christians to do in the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats. 2. Most of his hard-core enemies are unforgiving, self-righteous hypocrites, convinced that they themselves are good while he is evil. They are exactly like the Pharisee in the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. They completely ignore the fundamental Christian teaching that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Instead of praying for him and wishing him well, as Jesus taught, they curse him and wish he were dead or in prison somewhere. Here are the relevant Scriptures: The Central Importance Of Love _____________________________________________________________ For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:14 RSV) _____________________________________________________________ 1 CORINTHIANS 13 (RSV) 1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; 5 it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; 10 but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood. 13 So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. <>< LUKE 10:25-29 (RSV) 25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" 27 And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live." <>< The Vile Emotion Of Hatred 1 JOHN 4:20-21 (RSV) 20 If any one says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should love his brother also. The Danger Of Hypocrisy _____________________________________________________________ since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23 RSV) _____________________________________________________________ LUKE 18:9-14 (RSV) The Pharisee And The Publican (Tax Collector) 9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others: 10 "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank thee that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." MATTHEW 7:1-5 (RSV) 1 "Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.
