WHO ARE WE?

The deafintl e-mail discussion list is a network of people around the world connected with each other through e-mail. Deafintl now has more than 250 subscribers from more than 30 countries around the world. Deafintl is used for discussion related to the empowerment and to the social and educational advancement of deaf and hard of hearing people in developing nations. Deafintl members are deaf, hard of hearing, hearing, and deaf-blind. List members come both from developing and from developed nations.

Some listmembers are deaf people who have lived in a developing country or most or all of their life. Some are deaf expatriates from developing countries who are now studying, working, or otherwise living abroad. Deafintl also includes who are hearing and live in developing countries. In addition, some listmembers are deaf, hard of hearing, or hearing and live in developed countries.

Some of the people on this list have been working with deaf communities in developing countries for many years. Deafintl includes people who work with deaf and hard of hearing people in developing nations because it's their job, some who volunteer their time, and some who have done student internships. Some deafintl subscribers haven't yet started to work in this field but would like to. And some listmembers are here simply to learn more about what life is like for deaf and hard of hearing people in developing nations and what is being done to address some of the challenges they may often experience. All are welcome here.

Deafintl members are known to be either living in or originally from the following countries: Australia, Bhutan, Brasil (Brazil), Cameroon, Canada, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Ethiopia, Finland, Germany, Guatemala, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, New Zeland, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Tanzania, Taiwan, Uganda, Ukraine, and the United States
