Deafintl is an e-mail discussion list that allows participants to share thoughts, plans, ideas for projects, news, feedback, advice, suggestions, opinions, and information related to deaf and hard of hearing people in developing nations. Participants may talk about any topic that is related to facilitating the self-empowerment of deaf and hard of hearing individuals, organizations, and communities in developing nations.
Some examples of topics people can talk about on deafintl include: improving deaf education in developing nations; leadership training; establishing new deaf organizations; how people in developed nations can find internship opportunities with deaf communities in developing nations; how developing nations can attract interns; what role is appropriate for "outsiders" to have in facilitating the empowerment of deaf communities in developing nations; improving interpreting services; improving access to mental health services; issues related to the self-empowerment of deaf and hard of hearing people who are also women, members of a particular ethnic or racial group, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, or members of a particular religious group, etc.; establishing TTY relay services; and many, many more.
If you are new to e-mail discussion lists and don't know what they are, see the file on How E-mail Discussion Lists Work. For more detail on the kinds of topics that can be discussed on deafintl, see the posting guidelines in deafintl's policy page. To see the kinds of subjects that have actually been discussed on deafintl since it was established in August 1998, see the on-line web archives at http://waste.org/mail/deafintl. The deafintl archives has a key-word search engine. To see more information on deafintl listmembers, see the page on who we are.If you are interested in joining deafintl, see our instructions for how to subscribe yourself to deafintl. New subscribers are encouraged to be familiar with deafintl policy and netiquette (etiquette for the Internet) before making your first post. See our page on posting to deafintl for instructions on how to send an e-mail message that can be read by all the other deafintl listmembers.
Some deafintl members decide to become more active in making deafintl as accessible to as many people as possible or in making it a more useful resource for the people who use it. If you would be interested in volunteering some of your time for deafintl, please see our volunteer page.
