Elan En Garde! Game
Turn Resolution for June 1637
===================================
In Paris
There were a number of new arrivals in the City of Light. Yobesn d'Yullse Yshaevron and Zephram Zekelbahum chatted excitedly about serving His Majesty in a regiment at the frontier. They went to the shylocks and borrowed to their limit as well as from a gentleman in Paris, and then redistributed the wealth between them. Both applied to the Royal Marines, where only Yshaevron was accepted and bought a captain's commission. Zekelbahum's next choice was the Picardy Musketeers, where became a captain. Both went shopping for three horses each and were inseparable as they joined the column riding to the frontier. Along the way they looked after the soldiers in their charge and discussed their ideas for combat.
Stanislav Ortlion Savary was accepted into the Picardy Musketeers and bought the rank of Major. Marcel Laisse was accepted into the Princess Louisa Light Dragoons and became their newest subaltern. Both gentlemen also joined the march to the frontier.
Tensions were high at the King's Musketeers and Dragoon Guards barracks. The soldiers prepared themselves neatly and efficiently for their departure to the frontier while their commanding officers awaited word from His Majesty. The Duchesse d'Abril wrote a few letters to intimates of the King, outlining the Duc's many contributions to France and his military service. Word came back that he was appointed as Minister of War. Marquis Legris set his sights slightly higher and applied for Minister of State. His own service as Minister without Portfolio was taken into account, and the appointment was granted.
Coming into Paris was one gentleman who did not have the military immediately on his mind. Jacque Wabbit went to the shylocks to see about some financial matters whilst his manservant secured his membership at Red Phillips. Msr. Wabbit was the only gentleman of note remaining in Paris.
In the first week, he secured the services of an artist to paint a fresco of Gillian upon her garden wall. It took almost the entire week to make it, and the lady was so impressed she invited Jacque in as soon as she learned his identity. On the weekend he found a townhouse to his liking in Les Batignoles.
The second and third weeks found Msr. Wabbit at the military academy poring over tomes and moving miniature regiments about. The weekend found him enjoying the antics of the buskers outside the theatre district.
By the fourth week, Msr. Wabbit applied at the barracks of the GDMD and was accepted, and he bought a captain's commission. He was informed he would be joining the regiment on campaign in July, and he made his preparations.

On Campaign
With Adolphus in the south east and the Duke of Lorraine in the north, the first month of campaign focused primarily on logistics. Our brilliant Field Marshal, Vicompte Dillee, knew that without a solid logistics base, our campaign to subjugate the Sarr region would fail. In this campaign we will face two major enemies, the brilliant Adolphus and the ex-cardinal Nicholas II, Duke Lorraine. Nicholas II, sovreign of this dutchy, controls the Saar region, to which Merzig is the linchpin.
In a speech to the officers, Dillee emphasized that Merzig must not fall. With this injunction in mind, He emplaced our glorious second army behind the walls. The attacking army, controlled by a cousin to Duke Nicholas, had already built lines of circumvallation (for our non military readers in Paris, these lines are earthen ramparts and other temporary fortifications which the besieging army builds to protect itself from sorties by the besieged.) The first army was brought up from the city of light to besiege the besiegers, forcing the cousin of Duke Nicholas to also build lines of contravallation (earthen ramparts to protect against field armies allied with the defenders).
With two armies protecting Merzig, Vicomte Dillee broke
third army into brigades to protect his supply lines. The Horse
Guards Brigade were dispatched to protect the semaphore network,
with the Dragoon guards guarding the towers and the Queen's Own
Carbiniers protecting the Village. The Heavy Brigade was sent
in a reconnisance in force to keep in contact with Adolphus: losing
contact with an army to a general as brilliant as Adolphus would
spell doom for France. The Dragoon Brigade was sent to keep the
rivers clear of Duke Nicholas's forces. The Guards Brigade, still
reeling from the wounds that Merzig inflicted, were sent to sack
Weiskirchen, an unfortified town in the north-east.
Under cover of darkness, the Guards Brigade left Merzig and
were reinforced by the Royal Marines, the Picardy Musketeers,
the 13th Fusiliers, the 53rd Fusiliers, the 27th Musketeers, the
4th Arquebusiers, and the RNHR.
The eastern wall, now merely a large mound of rubble, had
the heaviest defense consisting of the entire First Brigade commanded
by Lieutenant General Aurillac. The Royal Marines had the north
end of the wall, while the Picardy Musketeers had the south.
During the early part of the month, a daring storming party pushed the first two divisions of the RM off the wall only to fall as Major Jean de Florrete brought reserves from the city in a daring counter attack. Leading this attack was Captain Yshaevron, new to Paris, who fought daringly as the RM's lines buckled. As the Germans broke through, Captain Yeshevaron threw himself into the breech, heedless of danger. His actions caught the enemy by surprise and they broke off, clearly not wanting to face this brave defender of France. Unfortunately two captains perished of their wounds.
On the southern part of the eastern wall, the enemy advanced and was rebuffed again and again. The Picardy Musketeers held, helped in part by Captain Zekelbahum and Major Savary. Captain Zekelbahum held his ground as wave after wave of bullets struck. He blunted the enemy attack, ensuring that a wall of willing flesh and steel was in place of stone. While new to the regiment, Captain Zekelbahum has proven his worth to them and to France. Meanwhile Major Savary daringly led a sortie against the lines of circumvallation. Despite being rebuffed by the defending attackers, he kept them on the defensive, ensuring fewer men were sent against the broken walls. For this daring move, Major Savary is to be commended.
Meanwhile, the second brigade, held in reserve, quickly ran to the south gate as the 4th Arquebusiers fell to a storming party. The routed regiment fled past the second brigade as the 53th took the walls and the 13th led a sortie out the gates. After taking shocking losses, the 13th managed to blunt the flow of enemies up the walls allowing the 53rd to hold. Subaltern de Beaumont displayed bravery in fighting three men who had managed to gain the wall, alone, and was promoted to Captain after the hubbub died down.
The north and west walls held, although no major losses were inflicted against the enemy.
Meanwhile, out in the field...
The Queen's Own surrounded the Village and prepared for the worst. Major Armand St-Cyr was sent out to establish contact with the enemy. Unfortunately, contact was found inadvertently as he blundered into the main enemy encampment. The enemy followed the severely routed third division back to the Village. Captalizing on the Major's mistake, Colonel Vigee-Lebrun sallied and crushed the enemy as they ran past, still pursuing the third division. Surrounded, the enemy was defeated in detail, taking over ninety percent casualties.
The Dragoon Guards, patrolling the tower network in divisions, mopped up the remainder. For his work in protecting the secret of the Village, Colonel Legris was promoted to Brigadier General. Captain Singe Elan's expertly deployed network of sentries indicated a knot of the enemy regrouping in a nearby riverbed. His quick reporting of the news to Colonel Legris allowed the Colonel to destroy the enemy before they had a chance to organize and fortify. Charging down the river, Colonel Legris herded the enemy towards Captain Nespah's dragoons. Legris hammered the enemy towards Nespah's anvil. With fire and flame, the last remnants of the army trying to find the Village were destroyed. Brigadier General Legris is to be commended for his effort on behalf of the people of France.
That night, as the Dragoon Guards were recovering from the battle and ministering to the wounded, Nespah's sentries reported unusual sounds in the distance. Taking the initiative, on a moonless cloudy night, Cpt Nespah raced to discover the source of the sounds. And well he did -- Cpt Nespah charged into the camp of a squadron of the enemy, surprising them utterly and killing them to a man. Cpt Nespah is a hero of France!
The Heavy Brigade did contact Adolphus. Unfortunately, the first contact came in the form of an ambush. In order to cover more territory, Brigadier d'Arcier split the brigade into regiments with the ALC taking the east and the CPC taking the west. Major Aubert's second division took the vanguard, with first and third to the rear and to the right and left respectively. Captain Potier's Squadron was riding point. The first notice the CPC had of the ambush was the hiss of arrows raining from the trees. Captain Potier's squad was slain to a man, but in his death the enemy made their first mistake: the rest of the company was alerted.
At the first sign of battle, Captain Pierre spurred his horse into the fray, wounded arm and all. Quickly realizing that Pierre needed the rest of his squadron, Subaltern LeBlanc followed Pierre's rash move. Pierre, heedless of personal danger as usual, spurred his horse at the enemy commander, saber out in his left arm, spearing the commander in the chest. Dismounted from this, Subaltern LeBlanc quickly rallied the rest of the men to drag the wounded captain from the fray. With his captain unconscious, Subaltern LeBlanc executed Aubert's orders with flair and panache, organizing the second division's retreat as the first and third finished the job.
Later, investigating the camp, General d'Arcier made a startling discovery; not only that the soldiers were acting like common brigands and looting travellers, but that they were acting here without orders. Finding the enemy's codebook, d'Arcier deciphered the movement orders and quickly galloped back to a semaphore tower to inform high command of the news, earning a battlefield commendation in addition to the valuable loot from the brigands.
The APC, meanwhile, found Adolphus's skirmishers without fanfare or difficulty and traded light casualties.
Meanwhile, on the Rhine...
The Dragoon Brigade, Brigadier Laffont commanding, was assigned to the protection of the rivers. The supply barges sailing up the rivers were slow and ungainly, perfect for marauding forces to slaughter. Splitting his forces, the Princess Louisa Light Dragoons were assigned to sweep the banks while Grand Duc Max's Dragoons were to play escort directly.
Colonel Megane's Dragoons, a squadron per barge, sailed slowly up the Rhine. Ahead, making no effort to conceal themselves, waited a mess of brigands. Rowing to shore, Lt. Colonel Desacroix lead two divisions to engage the brigands directly. Having thoroughly distracted them, though taking horrible casualties, they were left open for the rest of Colonel Megane's men, firing from the barges to decimate the lot. The demoralized brigands fled the field, leaving a wounded Lt Colonel and his Colonel with a not inconsiderable amount of loot. Both also received mention for their use of naval tactics.
Word in Merzig is that the Princess Louisa Light Dragoons have run into a larger company of the enemy and have been thoroughly routed, only the least detail has been described by one of the survivors, Subaltern Laisse. Apparently Lt. Colonel led his men into a two-pronged ambush, destroying the regiment in the process. We pray for the dead and hope that Paris will punish those responsible severely.
Meanwhile, somewhere in Merzig-Wadern...
Lt. General Moliere, demonstrating the same skill which took Merzig, made the sack of Weiskirchen look trivial.
A small company of defenders was sheltered before the wooden palisade protecting the town. Hiding the under-strength KM and CG in a small copse of woods nearby, Moliere advanced the Royal Foot Guards with instructions that they look like they had just survived a horrible battle and were hopelessly demoralized. Astonishing everyone with his acting skills, d'Ermatitis led the third division in the vanguard, sallying quickly to take advantage of the state of the men. Acting quickly, Captain Lefuet opened his men to entrap and encircle the charging enemy. While the battle occurred, Moliere sent the CG to close the trap on the sallied troops and the KM around behind the town to occupy its walls.
However, the taking of the walls was a dangerous undertaking with the weakened battalion, yet was made to look easy by d'Abril. Leading his men up hastily constructed ladders, d'Abril cleared an entire section of wall. Reinforced by his men, the walls were occupied without undue distress. Major de Treville hacked and slashed happily behind his Colonel.
Colonel Mondego happily led his men to "close the pocket" created by the Royal Foot guards. Both the first and third divisions distinguished themselves, led by Lt. Colonel van der Oops and Major la Vessie who displayed conspicuous gallantry during the fight.
The town, cleared of its defenders, was sacked in a very straightforward way. The jubilant troops even had time to purchase a sturrup cup of beer, a new but not entirely unpleasant experience, from the still-open taverns.
My gentle readers, the campaign season is off to a wonderful start!
By my hand, June 1637, Procipius de Ceseria.

The Regiments
The table shows the disposition of officer slots within each of
the regiments. C6 - C1 are the captain slots in increasing order
of seniority. M2 - M1 are the two majorities, LtC is the Lieutenant
Colonel, and COL is the Colonel. 000N0 indicates the position
is filled by an NPC. The first three digits are the NPC number
and the last digit is his MA. - means the position is open. Any
officer with a [ ] indicates this is the Brigade Major. A ( )
indicates the regimental adjutant, if any. { } indicates an officer
serving in a military appointment. Any officer with a military
appointment does not have a regimental command; that duty is passed
to the next senior officer of the regiment.
Any character holding a brevet rank of Col. or below will be indicated as holding both ranks (ie CPT and MAJ).
Remember, for game purposes, there is no limit to the number of privates and subalterns allowed within a regiment, and they will only be noted if occupied by a player character.
